PRo Features -- buy again?

I have the 'pro features'. Unlike other 'pro' versions of other apps I have, it is an in-app purchase. This does not survive the Family Sharing feature.

Every other Pro app I have purchased shares across Family Sharing, but because this company made this option an in-app purchase, it seems the only way my wife can use the pro features is to buy them again.

This is simply not fair. I feel ripped off. Why did this company not just make a full Pro version of the app?

We will not be making another in-app purchase of the same pro feature. Will this company do the right thing, or do we need to look for another app that is shareable?

I guess I should have clued in when I also had to buy the Mac version. When my wife logs into my Mac and uses the Mac version, will she lose some functionality too? What if she uses a Pro feature on there and it syncs to her non-pro version on her iPhone? I guess it wouldn't surprise me if it wants more money to function.

Not impressed with the business model.

Yes, it's annoying. I believe it's because AgileBits introduced the Pro features before Apple's Family Sharing was fully active, and did not expect this issue. Presumably reworking things so that there are two programs, the free one and a paid Pro one, is either difficult or just a low priority.

There is a way round the issue, though a touch clunky. If you get her copy of 1PW using your AppleID, then the Pro purchase will be valid. Wait for someone more experienced to give full details of this, as I think there are issues if she already has 1PW on her machine.

As for the Mac version, there is only one version (no separate Pro features), and there will be no issues.

    Thanks for your reply.

It is possible to change to a Pro version as a second version. The developers of Planefinder did something like this, and migrated their users to a new app - the migration worked well.

Re making hers work... I already tried logging into iTunes with my account on her phone. No luck.

Re the Mac version....So if my wife was to create an item on the Mac that was in a category not appearing in her version, what would become of it once it syncs?

If Agile is following this model, they should make it crystal clear in their marketing that the Pro upgrade will not work across Family Sharing. I just looked again - There is nothing warning about this prior to them taking your money. Or they should fix it.

To sell their app and upgrade like this without warning people that paying wasn't make it fully work is a bit misleading.

If they will not fix it, then they should give us all codes to activate the pro features on the disfunctional devices.

@Andre_Appleseed: When we designed 1Password 5 as a "freemium" app with an in-app purchase for Pro Features, Apple had announced that in-app purchases would be supported by Family Sharing as well. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way in the end.

This isn't something to do with AgileBits marketing. Apple simply does not allow any in-app purchases to be shared between Apple IDs. When you make any in-app purchase, you cannot share it in the same way you can a regular App Store purchase. That's just the reality.

With 1Password 5 for iOS, for the first time we offered a free version, which people can continue to use, no strings attached, and we're happy to help you even folks who never give us a cent. But we make money from those who purchase the Pro upgrade, either to unlock the Pro Features or simply to "vote with their dollars", which allows us to continue providing updates and support. For me, apps like 1Password are invaluable tools, and I'm happy to pay for good software I use every day that makes my life just a little bit less hectic.

But again, if you don't feel that we charge a fair price for our products, you've always got options. You can continue using the free version on other devices, or simply wait for a sale (which we have more often than you think, and I'm sure we will have others in the future).

Regarding your wife's iPhone, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but to be completely clear, any data that she sync's from another device will be accessible without costing you anything. 1Password for Mac is a completely separate (regular app, rather than in-app) purchase, so Apple's Family Sharing will allow you to share it with your family's Apple IDs.

So if my wife was to create an item on the Mac that was in a category not appearing in her version, what would become of it once it syncs?

Correct. For example, while you cannot create items in some categories in 1Password for iOS without the Pro upgrade, you can absolutely still view them — either by searching or in All Items. The Organize tab will not be present, but all items will be.

An in-app purchase of any app will not be validated by the App Store unless the app itself is installed using the correct Apple ID (where the purchase was made) and then restored using that same Apple ID. It isn't something I'd recommend, because Apple does put limits on Apple ID switching, and it can cause a lot of confusion and headaches with purchases.

I'm sorry that you feel that having to pay for 1Password separately on each unique Apple ID is unfair, but that absolutely wasn't our intent — and frankly we're all in the same boat when it comes to App Store purchases. We used to have multiple versions of 1Password for sale, and as frustrated as you are by the current situation, that was frustrating for a lot more people and I don't expect we'll go that route again.
