Embarrassingly simple questions...

Hello. I have been using 1Password for a few months on my Mac and it's been incredibly helpful, a huge stress reducer, thank you! I have even sold quite a few extended family members on the program also. I am embarrassed to admit I am not sure how to use the app on my phone. I have a few specific questions/problems.

  1. How do I access my passwords while using the internet on my phone? Do I have to access the internet through the 1Password app? I realize I must be missing something obvious...

  2. I'm having troubles with syncing my phone to my computer. I set up a Dropbox back-up and I just checked the Dropbox and it backed up yesterday, but my phone and mac do not have the same saved logins. In fact, my phone is quite a bit behind and missing a lot.

  3. Is there a 1Password for dummies tutorial somewhere? I'm pretty sure this application is capable of more than I am using it or can be done more efficiently than I'm doing it but I'm not sure where to look.

Thanks for any advice! Have a great day!

1Password Version: 6.1
Extension Version: 4.5.3.90
OS Version: Yosemite
Sync Type: DropBox

    @cltmel asked,

How do I access my passwords while using the internet on my phone? Do I have to access the internet through the 1Password app?

To do this, you will need to set up syncing of the data between your devices. There are three practical choices for you - Dropbox, iCloud, and WiFi. Read about that here: Sync options compared: Dropbox vs. iCloud vs. Wi-Fi You do this for your Mac and for your iPhone, and then you do use the 1Password app on your phone. But your next question suggests you already know this, so perhaps we need more information to understand your question.

See if there are useful approaches here: Dropbox sync is not working in 1Password Let us know if that gets you fixed up. If it doesn't let us know what your tried and what happens when you do that.

There are User Guides for each version on the main 1Password Support page. They each include elementary getting started sections, as well as documentation of the more advanced features.

  • Hi @cltmel,

It appears hawkmoth has said it just as well as I could have. :) If you have any follow up questions though please don't hesitate to ask.

Good evening! Thanks for your kind words and help everyone. It has taken me 6 months to return to this question...and now I have new questions that may change my original question. I am a little confused on what I should do moving forward with the family plan, subscription option, etc. My husband would like to jump on the One Password train and we are starting to acquire passwords for our elementary age children as they use technology more in their classrooms. We are not sure what is the most cost effective way for us to do this - we don't need fancy, the priority would be simple and straight forward. I have not solved the syncing my phone to my computer yet for One Password and I'm going to wait to dig into that more until I decide what we should do. Do I stay as is with my license purchase (1Password 5 for Mac (Educational License (1 user)) $23.99)? Do we go a family plan? Do we switch to the subscription? Is subscription the only option now? Worried about the monthly fee adding up over time. Not sure I need all the fancy extras, which quite frankly, I don't understand what they are. iPassword Team, iPassword Family is $5 per month, no idea. Any suggestions? Thanks for your patience and assistance/opinions!!!

  • Hi @cltmel,

For a family to use 1Password across all of their various devices 1Password Families is specifically designed to be a cost effective and easy to use solution with built-in syncing and sharing capabilities. There are no separate licensing fees for each person and each platform that they use. All of the supported apps are included for you and up to 4 additional family members. Syncing is as easy as signing into your account -- all of your data will be there.

We do offer a free trial of 1Password Families and I'd highly recommend giving it a go. You can read more here:

    Families - 1Password

We have a guide on how you can move your existing data from the standalone product to the 1Password service here:

Move your existing 1Password data to a 1Password account

    I hope that helps!

    Ben
