How to Populate Categories Efficiently
Hi
just a general question re design ideas for populating data in 1Password. I am finding that I I often have a lot of 'stuff' related to the same thing. For example, I have a bank account which has 1. login details, 2. a phone help password, 3. a newsletter. Another example is a shopping site with 1. login details, 2. a newsletter. At the moment, I have 2 to 3 entries in categories related to the same thing eg - one in Logins, another in Memberships and another in Bank Accounts. This means that I repeat some information.
I am wondering if this design is best practice or if people have found a better way to manage this?
Thanks

Hi @serky,
Thank you for writing in with your question!
From your description, it sounds like you have the right idea about creating different items for different types of information. To elaborate on the item categories in 1Password, there are three 'special' categories: Logins, Identities, and Credit Cards. Those types of items are used for filling specific types of forms on websites. Other categories (such as Bank Accounts, Memberships, and so on) are meant mostly for personal organization - they help you securely store and keep track of other information that you wouldn't normally need to fill on a website.
So, the way categories are set up in 1Password, you might have multiple/separate items that are related to each other. Bank accounts are a great example:
- A Login item can store the username and password you use to log into your bank's website.
- A Credit Card item can store the details of your debit or credit card so you can fill them in when shopping online.
- A Bank Account item can store details about the actual account you open with your bank (like an account number, routing number, branch address, etc).
Although those things might all be associated with the same bank, they are different kinds of account information used for different purposes, so they each have their own categories in 1Password. If you'd like to group those different items together in 1Password, you can use Tags.
For more information about the item categories in 1Password, take a look at this User Guide article: Categories
Hopefully this helps, but if you have more questions about that, just let us know! :)

Thanks for the reply. I understand the user of folders and tags to group information. I guess I was interested in whether the grouping should occur 'up front' to save having to manage folders/tags subsequently but happy to leave my current set-up as is. Thanks again.
