Switch from iCloud to Dropbox
Hello,
I currently run a Primary vault under 1Password. I recently received a work laptop from my company and decided it is time to split personal and work better. I use my personal iPhone for both work and personal. I would like to also take the chance to address my cross platform issue (I might need to use another Windows work laptop too).
The end state I would like to get to is:-
Move my current vaults (primary) from iCloud sync to Dropbox sync. Dropbox is the intermediary between my personal and work life (hence it will hold things that provides me seamless user experience from one laptop to another, i.e. it is my cloud account for synchronisation of app settings/data like 1Password and Alfred).
Create a "work" vault.
Set the "work" vault as default on my work laptop; set the "personal" vault as default on my personal laptop, but able to access both vaults when required.
Please let me know if that's possible and how.

Hi @ingsiang,
That's all certainly possible.
Just to make sure we offer the right steps what device would you use to split your work items from your current personal vault into a separate work vault? The reason I ask is if you can do this from a personal Mac that will be a lot easier than doing so from an iPhone. We can offer steps for either scenario though but hopefully the easier route will be available
One other question, do you want to keep separate work and personal Dropbox accounts or are you happy having everything stored in one account?0 -
Macbook Pro and MacBook Pro + iPhone.
I am happy to use a single Dropbox account - in fact my Dropbox is reserved as my app data sync option where I sync app settings across both laptops (good to keep same shortcuts and other preferences consistent).

Greetings @ingsiang,
Sorry to be a pain. What devices currently have your personal vault as it is, is it by any chance on one of the MacBook Pros? I only ask because if it is the setting out steps to split etc. will be a lot easier than if your vault is currently only on your iPhone. I just don't want to make a mistake by assuming anything as I'm thinking at least one of those MacBook Pros is the one you only want your eventual work vault on and I'm thinking it doesn't have any data on it right now? That's fine and what I want to avoid doing is having you place your personal data anywhere you don't want it like a work laptop.

Currently there's two vaults
1) Primary - sync'ed via iCloud, I want this to sync via Dropbox.
2) Work - not sync'ed, only on work MBP but I wanted to sync this eventually, together with primary, via Dropbox.0 -
But at the same time I also wanted the ability to set different "default" vault in different laptops/phones - e.g. default on phone and personal MBP will be my Primary vault, where as on Work MBP it will be "Work" vault.

@ingsiang: Great! Thanks for clarifying. This should be pretty straightforward.
One thing to keep in mind is that Dropbox syncs each vault separately, just like any other file or folder in your Dropbox account. So it's no problem to setup Dropbox Sync only for the primary vault, and then enable it separately for a secondary vault later. Just follow these steps:
- Disable sync on each device (for example, 1Password for Mac Preferences > Sync > Primary, select None from the menu). Repeat for each device you want to switch to Dropbox (1Password for iOS Settings > Sync > Sync Service > Disable
- Install Dropbox on your Mac (not necessary on iOS)
- Enable Dropbox Sync (1Password for Mac Preferences > Sync) for the vault
- Let Dropbox finish syncing the data
- Setup Dropbox Sync on your other devices, choosing the same vault from your Mac (default location is
(Dropbox)/Apps/1Password/
)
If you're not going to sync using iCloud going forward, you may also want to delete the data there completely (1Password Help > Troubleshooting > Reset iCloud Data). And you can repeat steps for additional vaults later on as needed.
I hope this helps. Be sure to let us know if you have any other questions! :)
