I don't know if it's related but here it goes:
sometimes files that I had deleted from the trash reappear (in the trash). If I delete them again, some remain deleted, others reappear in the trash again after some time.

    P.S.
there are still a few non-not localized menu items. A selection: the options when you right-lick the trash, View->Show Vaults, Collapse Source List, Vaults-> Edit Vault..., Exclude from all vaults.

@1P4Me: That happens to me with some attached drives, though not the internal that I can recall. Really confusing. Something to do with caching maybe...

Which particular localization are you referring to?

@brenty Sorry, a misunderstanding. I was referring to the trash in the 1P main window (not the OS trash). Wouldn't dream of bothering you with general OS issues :) loc=de

@1P4Me: Ohh. I did misunderstand that. Thanks for clarifying. I thought you were saying a macOS Trash issue might also point to something weird happening with other files on your Mac, such as 1Password's preferences. I totally bought that theory, even if it isn't what you meant. ;)

Thanks for letting me know about the localization issue. I'll poke a German to have a look. We've been making changes pretty fast, so it's possible that a few things slipped through the cracks...or that there are no localizable strings available for a few things just yet. :)

Not so good... as it just happened again on one of my Macs.

Before resizing the window, and even before quitting 1P, I've generated the report and sent you the email (from my known address).
As the email is created with support at agilebits.com in the destination address but you required here to send it to support+forum at agilebits.com, I've sent it to both addresses.
I've followed exactly what you wrote here so I hope you won't loose my message this time.

Oh and the Support ID number is #SAL-59623-617

Every time I launch 1Password I need to resize the dimensions of the window, because they are not ok for my workflow.
Is it possible to "save" my last used dimensions?

    1. I think I just found a way to trigger this on my mac, at least it happens a lot when I do this:
1P is locked. I used the PW-generator from the menu bar (not the main window), then clicked copy. All new entries (like generated PWs) are stored in my primary vault. In the 1P main window I move this new entry to the trash, emptied the trash and closed the 1P main window (= quit 1P main app + it's locked when main window is closed).
Upon starting the 1P main app again, I got the infamous resized/repositioned window.

    2. One other thing would like to ask (maybe related or not) that has me worried:
in total I have 190 items in 1P (says so in All Vaults and it adds up).
So why then does my backup say I have 240 items?
Where does this difference come from?

    3. Also, I would so appreciate an easy way to designate another vault as my primary vault ("make vault XY your primary vault"). I think it would make rebuilding my vaults and troubleshooting a lot easier for me.

@1P4Me - Hmmm, I can't replicate that behavior here. Our devs are looking into the issue to find out why a small percentage of users are still experiencing window size/repositioning issues, but so far we have nothing to announce on that front.

Regarding the vault item count discrepancy, a couple factors could be at work here. The backups created take into account ALL items in ALL vaults. Do you have more than one vault? If so, that could account for it. If you have only the single vault, then do you have 50 or so items in the trash? All Vaults view does not count the trash anywhere because, well, it's trash. :)

Regarding designating another vault as Primary, unfortunately, that will never be a possibility because of how 1Password is structured. The first fault you create in 1Password (standalone) is the Primary vault, always. This is the vault for which the vault password is also the Master Password for the app. When you create subsequent vaults, you're always asked to give those vaults a vault password, but that is (or at least can be) different from the Master Password. The reason this works this way -- and why it can't really be changed -- is that in order for us to remain "1Password," (as opposed to "HoweverManyPasswordsForEachVaultYouHave," we allow the encryption keys for the additional ("secondary") vaults to reside in the first vault (not visible or editable, but there nonetheless). So you enter your ONE password - the Master Password - and it in turn unlocks all of those other vaults regardless of whether you have the same vault password on each one. The preceding is a considerably-oversimplified explanation of how it works in practice, for ease of explanation, but it's largely accurate.

So that's why, if you have more than one vault, you can delete any secondary vault, but you can't delete the Primary vault...until you no longer have other secondaries. And it's also why you can't simply "designate" another vault as your Primary. If you're in a situation where you now have a secondary vault that you'd like to be primary instead, there ARE ways to do what you're asking for, but it would involve using Folder Sync to create an OPVault of each vault locally on your Mac, then resetting your data to zero using Help > Troubleshooting > Reset all 1Password Data and then starting over from scratch and using that secondary vault as the first one you choose this time, thus making it Primary. I don't recommend this to any but advanced users who really know what they are doing, for obvious reasons, but it can be done.

@Lars : Thank you for your detailed answer.
I have 9 Vaults, each with 0 trash items. And still:
number of items shown in All Vaults = 190
number of items shown in backup = 240

But as I said before... the 1P trash bin in my primary vault has not quite behaved as it should have ever since I updated to 1P v7 (with deleted items reappearing in the 1P trash bin days laters).
Could there be "hidden" trash items? Is my primary vault completely messed up? :)

P.S. if I do a folder sync, does it sync everything? I had 2 items missing in one of my vaults when I did a restore from a 'folder-synced' vault (fortunately that was just an experiment).

@raffoz in order that we can answer your question please tell us:

    • What is the version number of 1Password that you are using
    • What version number of macOS you are using

@raffoz - yep, we'll need to know the specific version you're using. "Latest" doesn't really help us, as often this isn't accurate. Thanks!

@1P4Me - OK, at this point, I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/?mac

Please add the following code (including the square brackets) to the Subject line of your diagnostics email before sending it:

    [#YJQ-19177-952]

This will link your diagnostics to our current discussion. We'll take a look and let you know what we find out.

For anyone else reading, please note: this ID is for @1P4Me only. If you’re experiencing the same issue and need help, please ask us for your own ID.

(To answer your question, yes, Folder Sync will sync everything from a single vault -- or it certainly *should*)

Please give me an ID. I am on 7.0.7, and for some time the problem was only intermittant, but now it is doing it every time. New window opens in the middle of the screen, and a ver small window (for my purposes) as well. This bug has existed for quite some time, with varying degrees of frequency. It is really annoying for an otherwise great program to behave this way. Same behavior on a 2015 MBP and a 2013 Mac Pro, both running macOS 10.12.6. I have tried every suggestion made by support and other users over the past months, and it just does not go away. This has been on all releases of 7.x.x

    So here's another update:

    1. I managed to "fix" the number of items displayed in the backup. I had to create new vaults for all vaults that had been created pre-1P version 7 and copy the corresponding items to them. And an extra one to hold the items from the primary vault. For restore I used the synced folder vaults: I reset 1P, created a new primary vault and added one vault at a time.
I noticed that after re-adding an entire (synced) vault that it would show wrong item counts and that there were some items missing. But after closing 1P and restarting it again they would be there again. As far as I can tell I managed to 'salvage' all items. I did that yesterday. Today after starting 1P I couldn't see any items at first, had to close & restart 1P again. I'll keep an eye on that and if it doesn't get better I'll report back or send a report.

    2. As for the window resize/reposition problem: I think I finally found a reliable way to repoduce this bug over and over again:
I took a VM (10.12.6, loc=de, all network services disabled = no internet access) that had almost nothing else on it except the OS. I installed 1P v7.0.7 (stand-alone) and created a new local vault. Didn't touch any of the default settings. Then I licensed it by dropping my license file on it (can't create or delete items otherwise). I created an item for my license. I moved it to the trash. Opened & closed 1P a couple of times. No problems. But then I emptied the trash! After that I got the resized/centered window.

I've mailed you an archive containing the sample of the 1P process, a 1P diagn. report and added a copy of the system.log. It should be quite pure since nothing else was running in that VM.

Please do consider the possibility that it may be related to localization and/or emptying the 1P trash when looking into this.
@Lars - Have you tried to repoduce it on a mac with a localization other than en? Or in a VM like me?
Can't believe the time I've spent troubleshooting this so far... ;)

BTW @raffoz @HenryAZ @Raca @billj @philbu @kvnhe : Is your OS language/localization different from English? Have you tried repoducing this bug by moving an item to the trash, empyting the trash, and then closing & reopening 1P main window? Just curious if there's a connection. Thanks everybody.

    @1P4Me
    Good catch!
At first try I reproduced the bug by moving an item to trash, emptying trash then quitting/reopening.
My OS is localized in French.

People at Aglibits, you should try this!

Wow. Emptying the trash seems to be the cause for me! I put an item in the trash, empty, restart 1Password and the window resets.

  • Hi folks,

It does appear this may be related to emptying the trash. I'm using 1Password in English and was able to reproduce the problem by emptying the trash (with items in it), and relaunching. I've updated development with this information. Thank you for your continued assistance in helping track this down.

Don't forget it’s also happening without emptying the trash.
But I hope it will help developers to fix this bug once and for all anyway.

@gwexler: This discussion is incredibly old, dealt with a very specific issue in a specific version that was resolved long before the current 1Password mini even existed, so I'll close it. Let's continue the discussion in the other thread you posted in. Please don't post the same thing in multiple places, and that can cause confusion and slow down the support process for everyone -- including you. Thanks.
