Family Plan for only 2 people??

We always had the stand alone 1password for ios, and we don't mind sharing the same vault and passwords...but we hated having to sync through Dropbox, as it rarely worked right. We're now using 1password 7 trial and plan to buy a subscription when the trial expires. My question is, is there any alternative to opting for the Family Account for Five when our family is now only two people? We 'd like for both of our ipads and both of our iphones to sync seamlessly like the subscription offers, but I can't get my head around paying for a 5 people family plan for 2 people. Is there any way that both of us can use the same online 1password account for all of our devices other than the more expensive Family of 5 Account? I thought about the Team Account, but that seems so confusing for just 2 people also. Any help or advice would SO be appreciated.

@jalyons: Two people is how I started with 1Password Families too. :) Keep in mind that you don't actually pay for five people with 1Password Families. Up to five are just included. It's cheaper than two individual 1Password.com memberships anyway, and you get the added benefits of being able to share with each other securely and also help the other recover their account (if you're both Organizers). But if you're used to sharing everything already and that works for you both, it's no problem if you share an individual 1Password.com membership. Either way, let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Thank you for the quick response, brenty!
No, I wouldn’t want to get two individual accounts. The problem is my husband doesn’t have much patience when it comes to computers & apps, and I’m a little worried that if he had his own vault, it’d be totally messed up most of the time.🙄 All he cares about is being able to click on the log-ins I already have and being able to get to those sites, since we already share a lot of them. That’s why I’m leaning toward sharing the same Individual account since that’s what he’s used to. If we did that when the trial is over, would I scan the qr code to his ipad & iphone also?...or is it just a matter of inviting him to my account? And would I delete the current 1password apps on his devices first before inviting him, or would they just be merged? Basically, getting it up & running on all 4 of our devices in the easiest way possible is the plan I want to choose.

  • If you'd like to share an individual membership you'd both log in to 1Password with the same credentials. Scanning the QR code from your Get the Apps page or your Emergency Kit can help facilitate that.

And would I delete the current 1password apps on his devices first before inviting him, or would they just be merged?

If he doesn't need to bring any data over from his current installation then uninstalling and reinstalling may provided the easiest and cleanest option.

@jalyons: In case it helps, you can totally share an individual 1Password.com membership to start and then easily switch to 1Password Families later if your husband gets comfortable with it and wants his own setup, with a Master Password of his choosing and his own Personal/Private vault. This is sort of what we did: shared a Dropbox vault for years, and then it was a relief to be able to have our own separate accounts with 1Password Families without making things more complicated. It's really just a matter of what works best for you folks. If there's anything I can help with, just let me know. :)

    Brenty,

Would you please describe how to set up that second “set-up”. We have shared 1Password since 2014 with one Dropbox vault. I purchased the Family Plan subscription and installed 1Password 7 on my iPhone, iPad and Mac. I designated the Shared Family Plan vault as the one that should open when I login with my Family Plan Login (email,Secret and Master Password). Works great across all devices for me. What is the best way to give wifey access to this same vault on all her devices?

The two of us have no reason to have or use a private vault (but our kid might if I can convince her to start using 1Password). I have tried setting up a separate login for wifey (by sending her an invite) from the 1Password.com site. When her login is created (her email, her Secret and her Master Password) I can’t figure out how the grant her access to the “Shared” vault I am using.

In both cases (my devices and her devices) I disassociated the “local” (Dropbox) vault within the 1Password app. It seems the easy answer is to just have her use my Family Plan Login.

And later when I set up the kid’s access I will just let her have her own login, Private and Shared vault. Not sure who the kid would be sharing with but I guess the advantage of the Family Plan is that I can reset her access if she forgets her Secret.

    Am I missing something?

  • Hi, @imagine0080.

If you already have a family account, you can simply invite your wife to join the account.

I have tried setting up a separate login for wifey (by sending her an invite) from the 1Password.com site. When her login is created (her email, her Secret and her Master Password) I can’t figure out how the grant her access to the “Shared” vault I am using.

It may be that you haven't confirmed her account. Once she has created her Master Password and signed in for the first time, you will need to sign in to your account, go to her profile, and click "Confirm" so that she can access the "Shared" vault.

However, if you are using the "Shared" vault that came with your account, note that it will be visible to all family members on the account. So if you add your daughter to the account as well, she will automatically get access to the Shared vault. If that's not what you want, you may want to create a vault that you share with just your wife and use the default "Shared" vault only for things that you want to share with both your wife and daughter.

All of that said, if you and your wife are content to share the same credentials and not have your own private vaults, you can certainly do that too. Did you have further questions about how to do that?
