Private vaults limit and upgrade price in Family

Hello, I'm currently considering upgrading my individual plan to family, and I have a few questions, on which I'd appreciate some clarifications/information.

  • It's unclear to me how many private vaults each individual user can have on each account. Is it the case that each user can keep 1 private vault? If so then what happens to my existing non-default private vaults when I upgrade to family?
  • I recently paid for my annual individual license. Since I've already paid for 1 yr, am I going to get the upgrade fee charged in a pro-rated manner?
  • Suppose a family member wants to become an independent individual account or start his/her own family group. Would that be easy to do so in a streamlined fashion? Or will they need to create a new account?
  • Hello ldopa! 👋

Thanks for the questions! I'll reply below directly to each of your questions:

Each account comes with a built-in Private vault but you can create more vaults as needed and choose whether to share them with other people or not: Create and share vaults

Suppose a family member wants to become an independent individual account or start his/her own family group. Would that be easy to do so in a streamlined fashion? Or will they need to create a new account?

If a member of your 1Password Families membership wishes to create their own account in the future, separate from your membership, then they'll need to create a new account. They can then add both accounts to the same 1Password app and move their items from the existing family account to the new account. We have a blog that goes into more detail here:

I recently paid for my annual individual license. Since I've already paid for 1 yr, am I going to get the upgrade fee charged in a pro-rated manner?

In general, the prorated difference between the two plans will be calculated automatically. That being said, I recommend reaching out to our billing team at support@1Password.com for specific billing questions. They'll be able to check your account and provide guidance that's tailored for your situation.
