Touch ID keeps getting turned off

I'm on the Beta channel for macOS Sonoma to get round problem with errant migration pop-up (81036001) and now TouchID setting refuses to turn on. (I see a very brief flash of a tick mark)
Update: Actually if I tick "Apple Watch" as an unlock option then Touch ID tick icon activates. But as per the OP TouchID turned itself off between yesterday and today.
