New item password filled with dots even when not filled

When creating a new item manually, the password field shows dots as if filled. When saving the password, the field is empty. This is annoying and unintuitive.

Furthermore, the generate-password button on larger displays is faaaar to away on the right to be visually connected with the field.

The Password field should IMHO be pre-generated for new items, as the desktop app does.

    Hey @finwe ,
Thanks for your input and feedback here.

I'm trying to reproduce what you are describing when generating a new password but it seems to be saving it properly and not leaving the field blank. Care to elaborate with a step-by-step description of your actions?

The Password field should IMHO be pre-generated for new items, as the desktop app does.

I'm not quite sure where/how you see that behavior, but when creating new login items in the native apps the password field is not pre-generated and will remain empty without user interference.

    Thanks for a reply.

You are right about not prefilling the password. I might have confused this with this very problem, or remembered a different behaviour of 1Password 4, maybe?

Anyway, pregenerating a password with current generator settings for new Login and especially new Password item types seems like an improvement to me.

    Thanks for clarifying :)

It might be a proper use case for when generating a new password item, but I don't think it would be relevant for when creating a new login item.
In any case, thank you again for the valuable feedback here! Much appreciated :+1:

I have noticed that the Mac app behaves the same way. The Windows app is not affected.

Yes, the password field is masked even if there's no input in it in the Mac app as well as the web app.

I do think you might benefit from a different workflow though, in order to prevent confusion (and to do things more quickly and efficiently) - why not use the password generator in your browser's extension? Via the generator you can create/save a new login item or a password item that is already filled with the password you generated. Wouldn't that make more sense? Or are you already doing that but just want to bring this specific UI/UX improvement to our attention? :)

Sorry for a long pause, some notifications do not reach me via e-mail and I tend to forget I started a conversation.

Don't event get me started on workflows. Either create a user experience with a clear single path through each one process, or just deal with when people have different approaches to the process the best you can (such as not displaying an empty field as if there was something filled in it).

Of course I use autocreating passwords in the browser when the situation allows it. But I also create items that cannot be prefilled in the browser. And for this, I simply have to create a new item directly in the app.

    Hey @finwe
Glad to hear back from you.

We are definitely working on unifying the 1Password experience across platforms and browsers as we speak. We're actually rebuilding our client apps from scratch for that exact purpose. Though I do not have an ETA on when they'll be ready to ship, we're all waiting eagerly for it here. A unified UI/UX is definitely needed, as you stated. :+1:
