Linked apps mystery

In Quick Access, pressing Return or clicking Open & Fill for a couple of different logins suddenly did not work.

When I looked at the login items in the 1Password desktop application, I noticed there was a Linked Apps section that had Finder and Safari for one of them and just Safari for the other. Deleting the linked apps from the login items restored the normal behavior of Quick Access.

My question is, how did the linked apps get there? (As far as I know I didn't add them.)

1Password Version: 8.7.0
Extension Version: Safari 2.3.3
OS Version: macOS 12.4

OK -- I now see that I must have clicked Fill & Update Login in an alert saying, "Would you like to link your "Mac Login" item in 1Password with your macOS user account login," as explained in the "Get help" section here: https://support.1password.com/mac-universal-autofill/#fill-in-apps-and-browsers

So now my questions are, why did I get that alert and what is the advantage of creating a link?

The documentation at the link above says, "You can then autofill your details every time you log in to the same app or website," but that wasn't my experience.

OK again -- I now realize this is the scenario that resulted in my confusion:

    1. Open a new browser window or Finder
    2. Instead of pressing Shift-Command-Space to bring up Quick Access, inadvertently use muscle memory from 1Password 7 and press Command-\
    3. In the Quick Access window that appears, begin typing the name of a website and click Autofill or press Return, which brings up an alert popup ("Would you like to link your 'Mac Login' item in 1Password with your macOS user account login?")
    4. Click "Fill Once," which does nothing
    5. Click "Fill & Update Login," which adds the browser or Finder to a Linked Apps section in the Login item but does nothing else

So, the lesson is, don't use Command-\ to bring up Quick Access in a blank browser window or Finder.
