Are Smart Folders supported in 1Password 8 yet?
I've avoided upgrading to 1Password 8 so far, due to Smart Folders not being supported, which I make extensive use of in 1Password7. I can see various posts re Smart Folders in the forums here, but don't see anything that's been posted recently. So my question is... have Smart Folders been implemented in 1PW8 yet?
Just today I received a notice in my browser (Firefox) that the 1PW Classic Extension is going to stop working soon (https://support.1password.com/kb/202303/). The first step mentioned in that support article regarding the 1PW Classic Extension no longer continuing to work, is "Upgrade to 1Password 8". This effectively means 1PW7 is being killed. If I can't access my passwords in the browser, then that's a huge bit of functionality that 1PW7 is losing, and important functionality that actually makes it useful.
Not only is it frustrating that you're effectively forcing us to upgrade to 1PW8, on top of having to pay a subscription fee, I would also be getting less functionality if Smart Folders still aren't supported ☹️
I also raised this same question early last year, and the answer was no, they hadn't been implemented in 1PW8. Is that still the same answer, and if so, have you at the very least, added better functionality for managing tags, such as the ability to "favourite" certain tags to keep them separate from a huge long list of tags?
Thanks in advance.

Hello @ahortin! 👋
Thanks for following up, it doesn't look like there are any updates for that feature request yet. For 1Password accounts "smart folders" were largely replaced with tags since tags offer flexibility when it comes to organizing items in many situations: Organize with favorites and tags (1Password 7 didn't support smart folders for account vaults either.)
I know that it was already mentioned in the previous thread but you can scope which tags you see at a particular time by using collections, when a collection is selected you'll only see tag relevant to that collection. So for example, if you select your work collection you'll only see tags that you use for work: Use collections to create custom groups of vaults.

1Password Classic was last updated in 2019. It was built on older technologies and will not be compatible with future updates to web browsers. Our latest extension, which does require a 1Password account, is in active development: https://support.1password.com/getting-started-browser/

Hi @Dave_1P.
Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that they still haven't been implemented, and I'm guessing at this stage, it's unlikely that they ever will.
While tags are useful, they're nowhere near as flexible as Smart Folders. Smart Folders allow you to create selections based on multiple tags, which is so much more useful than simply viewing the contents of one tag at a time.
While I can see the value of collections, having to constantly switch between collections to use my own personal/business logins, and a separate collection for Client logins, would be annoying as hell. Again, Smart Folders just made 1PW so much more useful.
I already use 'Favourites' but unless I'm mistaken, you can only add an individual login/item to your Favourites. You can't add a tag to your Favourites.
Is there any way to 'favourite' certain tags so that they stand out from all the other tags? I already use Tags extensively, so having to scroll through a long list of tags just to find my most commonly used ones, like Client logins for example, is going to be a pain in the ass. The ability to either Group tags or mark certain ones with a star, or 'favourite' them so that they appear at the top of the list or in a different section, would go a long way to making them more useful. I don't particular want to have to start naming tags like "01 Client Website Logins", "02 Client Database logins", just so that they float to the top of the Tags list so that I can find them easier. That just seems like a real hacky workaround. Thanks,

Thank you for the reply. I agree that Smart Folders were useful to many and our team is working on further building 1Password 8's search capabilities so that search filters become more capable. The current feature set is described here: Search in the 1Password app to find what you need
I've passed along all of your comments as they'll help the team understand what kind of search features you're looking for in 1Password 8. I can't promise that Smart Folders will be implemented but I can say that Search will continue to get better and more powerful.

Have you considered using nested tags for some items? You can create parent and child tags and then view all child tags by selecting the parent tag: Organize with favorites and tags

There isn't at the moment but I think that's an interesting idea and I've filed a feature request on your behalf. For now, you can quickly pull up a certain tag by typing a search filter. So if you want to see your Recipes tag you can search
=tag:Recipes

It's shouldn't be more than a two-click process:
- Click on the account selector in the top right corner.
- Click on the appropriate collection.
You can also quickly switch between collections using Command-1 to Command-9 on your keyboard.
Personally I find using collections makes managing my work and personal items much easier. It would definitely be a change in your workflow but I'd be interested to hear about your experience if you do give 1Password 8 a try in the future. 🙂
