"Apple Watch Unlock Stopped Working" Closed But NOT Fixed

This thread was commenced in November 2022 and closed sometime after Aug 2023 comment by @Dave_1P .

It is still a VERY frustrating issue that irritates me every day. I have to resynch the setting in System Settings to get the unlock for 1PW working again.

Has this been moved elsewhere or just dropped due to lack of interest? @Dave_1P

  • Hello @VirgilBoy! 👋

I'm sorry that you're still running into issues with Apple Watch unlock for 1Password. In general, old discussions are automatically closed by our forum software after a certain amount of time has passed without any new activity in order to avoid confusing folks with threads that might no longer be relevant.

That being said, can you post a link to the thread that you're referring to so that I can take a look? I look forward to hearing from you.

HI Dave - thanks for the quick reply!

There are a lot of conversations in the Apple Watch area. I have not taken the time to see if this specific issue is being discussed there. So many of the conversations there seem vaguely similar when I looked a while back.

Thank you for linking to that thread! The issue being discussed in that thread has been investigated by our development team and we've narrowed the behaviour down to issues with Apple's Apple Watch APIs. Our team has mitigated the issues as much as possible with changes to how we use those APIs and have filed feedback with Apple regarding the remaining issues that we can't workaround.

I'd like you to test to see if the issue that you're still experiencing is the same issue as the one discussed in that thread by seeing if the same problem occurs when you try to use your Apple Watch with an Apple system prompt. The next time that you're unable to unlock 1Password using your Apple Watch, please perform the following test:

    1. Click on the  in the menu bar.
    2. Click System Settings.
    3. Click Privacy & Security.
    4. Click Advanced.
    5. As a temporary troubleshooting step, turn on "Log out automatically after inactivity".
    6. You'll now see a macOS system prompt asking you to confirm the action. You should receive a double-tap notification on your Apple Watch.

Let me know the results. 🙂

OK...I will do the specific test. But....my observation is that the Apple functions, such as unlock my Macs, etc work perfectly. Then I go to 1PW to unlock with Apple Watch and so often it will not work

  • @VirgilBoy

Thanks for the reply. The flow used to unlock your Mac and the flow used to unlock third-party apps both work slightly differently. For example: you need to double-press the side button to unlock both 1Password and macOS system prompts but you don't need to do that to unlock your Mac.

Authenticating a system prompt is more similar to how 1Password uses Apple Watch unlock and can tell us if the issue that you're running into matches the issue that we've reported to Apple.
