how to remove 1Password 8 fully

Hello. My mother is using 1Password 7 from the Mac App store successfully for over 1 year. However, prior to this my sister had installed 1Password 8 on a family plan, and had added her as a member - but my mother has no idea how to enter this and how many entries it has - she has no need to access it. All my mother desires is to use her individual 1Password subscription to migrate to 1Password 8 on her Mac (latest OS). But she is prevented from doing so since 1Password 8 is expecting a different password that is associated with her email address there. Is there a way to fully remove 1Password 8 on a Mac?

Thank you for your detailed instructions. These were easy to follow for us and now my mother is fully migrated to 1Password 8.

    • Your data is maintained outside of the app and will be completely safe. * Please be mindful to follow the steps below, especially the part about NOT using an app cleaner. They have been known to remove user's data, and we DO NOT want that to happen.
    1. Quit all open web browsers, especially Safari.
    2. Look for our helper in the menu bar near the WiFi indicator and the clock. Right-click on the 1Password 7 helper and select "Quit 1Password completely".
    • 1Password 7 may not be running in the menu bar. If it's not, please continue on with the following steps.

    • Note: 1Password 8's helper only uses the word "Quit".

    1. Drag 1Password 7 from the Applications folder to the Trash 🗑 . Do not use an "app cleaner" or "uninstaller" tool to remove the app or additional files. If prompted, enter the password you use to sign in to your Mac.
    • If you see a 1Password 7.app.zip file you can remove it too.

    • Step 3 will also remove the older 1Password 7 extension from Safari.

That should get you going. Please let me know if you have any trouble.

That worked excellently, thank you. Now that she is up and running with 1Password8, what is the best method to remove 1Password7? I was worried that the reset inside of 1Password7 might affect her 1Password8 (they use the same vault). Thanks!

    Hi there ukmacnut

It sounds like you can solve this by resetting 1Password, rather than having to fully remove it and reinstall it. Here's what to do:

How to reset the 1Password app on a specific device

Because you won't be able to unlock it, press ⌘, (Command–comma) to open Settings, rather than what it says in step 1.

Give that a go and let me know how it goes. :)
