Absolutely frustrating (and frightening) syncing issues

I have used 1Password for years without any significant syncing issues. The only one I've experienced was about a year ago when I had some problems with Dropbox syncing large files on one of my Macs that I switched to using iCloud syncing. No problem.

Recently, I've had to change my password at my college as part of their regular requirement to change passwords. As usual in such circumstances, I used the password generator, saved it, and filled the new password in my college's registration page. When I went home later that evening, the MacMini never got the iCloud update. I look on my phone--no update! All iOS devices at home--no update! I try the manual sync, still no update!

When I return to the office, I decide to ditch iCloud syncing, since it obviously no longer works (even though it tells me it updated "a minute ago") and go to Dropbox syncing. But lo and behold, this has changed--I now have to locate my "vault," but where is it? The agile bits website infer on Dropbox syncing is out of date and doesn't even discuss the vault.

I'm back to iCloud again. I had to reset my college password twice and write it down on paper (!) for fear it would be overwritten through all these weird, time-consuming, and even frightening syncing issues. What is going on? I've never had any problems with 1Password in the many years I've used it.

+1. I have to agree with you. I have used 1Password since version 1 on Mac, iOS and Windows. Through version 3, it was rock-solid and I had full confidence in it. From my perspective, the upgrade to version 4 has been a fiasco. It's too bad that all the Apple blogs and media are either too cursory in their evaluations or too in hoc to potential advertisers to cover it. All the reviews are such puff pieces.

1Password 4 has been plagued by sync problems and issues with lost data since the beta program, which I was part of. I was shocked when the final version was released, because there were still so many outstanding issues. Dropbox sync continues to be so error-prone for me I have no faith in it. The release notes for version 4.1.3 contains, "Fixed problem where 1Password could send the wrong item to Trash." In a file with more than 1500 entries, how am I to know if I haven't deleted the wrong thing because the application deleted an item that wasn't selected. Like you, I have taken to writing changed passwords down (well, rather saving them in text files in encrypted disk images!).

So far, AgileBits seems incredibly blasé about the issues and responds only with pleas for patience about how overwhelmed they are since the new version was released. Well, it seems to me it was released way prematurely, and I can't believe they have so little concern when customers are entrusting absolutely critical information to 1Password. If data isn't safe in 1Password, then there is no point to the app at all.

My wife's employer just bought her a new MacBook Pro and she became convinced that 1Password was the way she was going to enter the modern OS world. After today, I'm delaying that whole transaction. I'm using the Mavericks password feature starting today because I can't get any kind of reliable syncing through iCloud at all--on any of six devices--nor can I find the default vault on my Mac for Dropbox (you can't search for it and the documentation is for 1Password 3!),

The iPhone app shows "just synced" or the thermometer churns away--doing what, I have no idea, but it's not syncing. Neither old passwords are updated nor new passwords for new sites remembered across devices. The only thing that still works is wifi syncing, but can you understand why I'm even nervous about that? I'm making backup files manually since I know longer have confidence that I will have access to my own passwords. What a nightmare.

Hi, I have the same problem like you with dropbox.
I use mac os mavericks + 1password 4.1.2 version on both (macbook pro and mac mini), and when you sync vault with dropbox 1password cannot merge one vault from macbook pro and second vault from mac mini. Macbook shows me 9 items in vault and Mac mini shows me 12.
Too bad to hear about this weird bug from 1password :(

    Hi @grhafer30,

I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to you here but we experienced a surge in support requests recently. We're doing the best we can to get back to our usual speedy replies as soon as possible.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been having trouble getting things synced up. There have been a few sync-related bugs in earlier versions of 1Password 4, but the most recent (4.1.2 for Mac App Store purchasers and 4.1.3 for users who purchased from our website), should be syncing properly. I'd be happy to take a closer look at your system, just to ensure that everything is set up as it should be: could you please send us a Diagnostics Report?

Download the 1Password Troubleshooting utility and follow the instructions to generate the report.

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@ agilebits .com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    Hi @drew212,

I can see how this situation is frustrating for you, and I do apologize. It sounds like you've heard our apologies before, but that doesn't make them any less sincere. :) Please understand that being overwhelmed with support requests does not mean that we are unconcerned. In fact, we've all been putting in extra hours (developers included) to squash these sync bugs, and to get our response times back to an acceptable level.

As I mentioned above, the latest version (4.1.2 for Mac App Store purchasers and 4.1.3 for users who purchased from our website) should see a significantly smoother syncing experience. If you are still seeing errors in Dropbox, please follow the instructions above to generate a Diagnostic Report so that we can take a closer look at your system.

    Hi Александр Рыбалка,

I'd be happy to help you get synced up here, but I'll need just a bit more information about what you're hoping to do:

    • Are you wanting to sync all of your vaults between the MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini?
    • Are you trying to merge one vault on the MacBook Pro with a different vault on the Mac Mini?

There are a few things to keep in mind here. First of all, it is important to ensure that you are logged into the same Dropbox account on all computers and devices. Each vault in 1Password will have separate sync settings. You can set these in Preferences > Sync.

Once you give me a few more details about what your goal is here, I'll be able to give you some instructions on how to get things sorted out!
