Change Request: Categories List in 1Password 4 Plug-in and Mini

Please provide the user a way to customize the order in which Categories are listed in the browser plug-in and 1Password mini.

Currently, the Categories are listed in alphabetical order (except Logins), and only the first five are shown. An extra step is required to reach the others. This means certain important Categories (e.g., Identities) require that extra step, while certain trivial ones (e.g., Driver Licenses) are among the top five.

It would be satisfactory if the user could decide which Categories should be in the immediate list, with the others requiring that extra step. The two parts could still be in alphabetical order, with a separator when the full list is shown.

    Hi @dclewis55,

Thanks so much for providing your feedback here. This is a popular feature request, and I'm happy to add your vote to the issue in our tracker! I think you make a good point about Identities (which are one of our magical filling item-types) might be more useful than Drivers' Licenses. :)

    Hey @dclewis55 & @Megan,

Doesn't the order of categories in 1Password mini match the order in the main app? If I re-order the categories in the sidebar of the main app, that is the order in mini as well.

Not in alphabetical order for me:

The order I set manually in the main app also gets reflected on my iOS devices, for which I am very grateful.

  • @hawkmoth Really? The order of categories on my iPhone and iPad are different than on my Mac, which is good because I like them different.

    Hi guys,

In 4.2.BETA-6, the order of categories in the main app and mini differs with some of my vaults, e.g.:

And reordering categories in the sidebar doesn't seem to stick.

Just checked 4.1.3 (Mac) and 4.3.2 (iOS). The category ordering differs between both main apps and mini.

Something's amiss; I'll file a report so we can do more testing.

  • And reordering categories in the sidebar doesn't seem to stick.

It doesn't seem to save the changes to the sidebar (and mini) until I restart 1Password mini.

That's what I originally did but it wasn't working consistently for me.

I would have tried to do this by editing my earlier post, but the time is past to do so:

    I said:

    To which @JasperP replied:

Really? The order of categories on my iPhone and iPad are different than on my Mac, which is good because I like them different.

So while trying to verify what I said, I realized that shortly after I began using the earlier betas of version 4 I arranged the Categories in the side panel to suit myself and then manually made the order match on my iPad and iPhone, which had to be done separately on each. The sort order doesn't sync from the Mac or among the iOS devices either, at least with Dropbox as the cloud service.

Sorry to introduce that distraction! :\">

And I now see that the sort order in mini doesn't match the sort order in the main application either on my Mac.

    Not a distraction, @hawkmoth. :)

With 1P4 on the Mac, category ordering appears to be semi-arbitrary in mini until categories have been manually sorted in the main app sidebar and mini is restarted (initially, and after future sidebar reordering). That seems sufficient to keep mini and sidebar category ordering the same.

No syncing of category ordering is done between 1P4 Mac and iOS, like you and @JasperP have reached consensus on. :)

Item ordering in the Favorites category should be synced, though.

Yes, I see now, having just reordered my sidebar, quit the main application and mini, and reopened 1Password. I think that must be something newer than the last time I reordered the sidebar, because my installation didn't have the same sort order in the main application as in mini. I am certain I reordered the sidebar soon after I found I could do so, sometime last summer.

    Thanks, @sjk.

    You're welcome, @hawkmoth.

I hope this is helpful for @dclewis55, too. :)
