Dropbox Master Password

I am trying to sync my wife's 1Passwords with mine. Since we have different iCloud accounts I am trying to use Dropbox. I have a 1Password.agilekeychain file on a shared folder in our respective dropboxes. I was able to sync my computer, but when I tried to connect my wife's computer it asked for the master password for that dropbox account. When I entered the password it did'n take it, even though I am able to log in to the dropbox account using the same password.

Any ideas?

Thanks

it asked for the master password for that dropbox account.

Just to be clear, if Dropbox is asking for a password you need to enter your Dropbox password.

If the 1Password app is asking for your password, then you should enter your Master Password.

Could you please clarify where exactly you are being asked for the password which is failing? Thanks in advance! :)

I am in 1Password preferences/sync/dropbox. I click on choose vault or folder and select the 1Password.agilekeychain file from the Dropbox folder. I get a message that says 1Password found existing data in Dropbox. I click the continue button and get the message "Enter master password for your existing data in Dropbox". I have tried entering the Dropbox password, 1Password master password and the Apple log in password and none of them work.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi @Hbit,

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting set up here. As @JasperP says above, if 1Password is asking for your password, it is looking for your Master Password. The message you quote here is asking for the Master Password for the 1Password.agilekeychain you are clicking on. Typing this Master Password in will merge the data in that keychain with data in your current vault.

Are you trying to set up multiple vaults? Or do you and your wife want to share your entire 1Password database? Please let me know the version numbers of 1Password and your operating systems for all computers and devices currently running 1Password.

Once we know a bit more about your situation, we'll be able to give you some steps to get it all sorted out. :)

Thank you! I put in the password for my keychain and it worked.

We are both running 1Password Version 4.2.2 on MacBook Pros running on 10.9.2. The files just merged when I put in my password and we are now sharing our entire database, but I think it would be nice to have multiple vaults, especially since we are now sharing 747 items and we are each probably not interested in a lot of them.

    Thanks

    Hi @Hbit,

I'm glad to hear you were able to unlock the shared Agile Keychain with 1Password on your wife's Mac, even though doing that has currently merged/shared all of the data in both of your vaults. Let's get that data unmerged, then only sharing what you want with each other. :)

It sounds like neither of you are currently using multiple vaults. If that's the case here's how you can configure a primary (private, unshared) and secondary (shared) vault for each Mac …

    On each Mac:

    • Open 1Password 4, run File > Restore…, and confirm if there's a pre-merged 1Password database you'd be able to restore (but don't do that yet). Stop if you don't find one.
    • Now select the Sync tab in the Preferences window (which should still be in the Backup tab) and click Change Syncing….

      • On your wife's Mac, keep the Delete data from Dropbox option disabled, then click Disable Sync to confirm.
      • On your Mac, enable the Delete data from Dropbox option, then click Disable Sync to confirm.
    • Wait for Dropbox to finish syncing; you should see a green checkmark on its menubar icon.

At this point 1Password syncing should be disabled on both Macs, with the keychain containing the shared data removed.

    On your Mac:

    • Run File > Restore… and select the most recent pre-merged 1Password database to restore.
    • Reopen 1Password 4 and confirm all the data has been restored.
    • Now create a new vault, with instructions in the multiple vaults guide.
    • Next you can share that new, non-primary vault, using the same shared Dropbox folder as the other (now removed) keychain or a different one. For the moment stop at the Adding a shared vault step.

    On your wife's Mac:

    • Run File > Restore… and select the most recent pre-merged 1Password database to restore.
    • Reopen 1Password 4 and confirm all the data has been restored.
    • Return to the Adding a shared vault step you'd previously stopped at on your Mac.
    • Open and unlock the keychain you created in the shared Dropbox folder on your Mac.

And that should leave each of you with a primary (private, unshared) and secondary (Dropbox synced/shared) vault in your 1Password databases. :)

With 1Password 4.2.2, one selected item at a time can be copied between vaults using Item > Share > VaultName. With the upcoming 4.3 update, multiple selected items can be copied or moved between vaults.

I hope that multi-vault configuration will work well for both you and your wife. If you have any questions, issues, or would rather do it some other way we'll be here to help you out. Thanks!

I have a similar issue. I set up 1Password and after only a few save passwords I tried to sync with dropbox, which worked ok. I then decided to change the master password for something a bit easier to remember and now if I try to sync with dropbox the password that dropbox recognises is the old one. Can I update that one to agree with the 1Password master password?

    Hi @DaveGB,

When you changed your Master Password (MP) was syncing enabled with the keychain in Dropbox? If it was disabled the keychain wouldn't have any way of knowing about the new MP and would still need to be unlocked using the old one when reenabling syncing. If that's what happened have you reenabled syncing yet using the old MP? And if you lock/unlock 1Password is it accepting the new MP?

If syncing is currently disabled what you can do is first make sure you're able to lock/unlock 1Password using any MP, then reenable syncing with the keychain in Dropbox. If it prompts for the MP then it should unlock using the old one. After that do another MP change (with syncing still enabled) and the keychain in Dropbox should pick up that change. To verify it, disable/reenable syncing and no MP should be required. Finally, lock/unlock 1Password again to verify the new MP works there.

Another option is simply to remove the existing keychain in Dropbox, then recreate a new one that's aware of the current MP by configuring 1Password Dropbox syncing again.

Also, do you have 1Password configured to sync with that keychain on any other systems/devices? They might also need syncing reconfigured and MP changes.
