How to Upgrade from 1Password 3.8.22 to 5.x (latest version)?

What is the correct way to upgrade, so that all data is carried over to the new version? I downloaded the latest version, but it's a .app file and I didn't install it because I'm "assuming" it installs a separate instance of it.

Let me know the right way to do it.

    Hi @z1pwduser‌

You can upgrade directly from version 3 to version 5, simply follow the instructions in our Knowledgebase article: Migrating from 1Password 3. The instructions are written for 1Password 4, but it's the same steps for version 5.

1Password 5 will be a separate app, so it will not install over top of 1Password 3.

I hope the migration process goes smoothly for you, but if you have any questions, you know where to find us! ;)

Thanks, that worked. Is it safe to delete/uninstall my old version 3.8.22? If so, is there a preferred way to do that?

    Hi @z1pwduser‌

The two can safely live next to each other if you want to keep hold of it a little longer but if you'd rather keep your Applications folder free of clutter than you can simply drag 1Password 3 to your Trash. That will leave the data files for 1Password 3 in your Library folder but it's advised to hold on to them for a while anyway.

Later down the line, when you're absolutely sure you don't need anything again then you could remove the data files associated 1Password 3.

Depending on where you purchased 1Password 5 will determine where your current files are. Your current files will either be in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4 for the webstore version or ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper for the MAS version. Again, I stress these are the current ones you wish to keep. I mention this because the files for 1Password 3 are in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password. See the subtle, but very important difference between webstore versions?

To stay nice and safe I'd suggest terminating 1Password 5 with ⌃⌘Q to terminate both 1Password and 1Password mini. Then move the folder for 1Password 3 to your desktop. Confirm 1Password 5 still opens with your current vault and then you can move that folder to the Trash. As you can see, if you're confident there are a number of steps you can skip, just take care - your vault is important

    Thanks.

I've just noticed a problem. I'm showing 972 items in vault on my Mac, but 1319 items on my iPhone app.

The iPhone app is using the database that is sync'd with Dropbox. I also noticed a random password that was NOT in 1PW 5 on my Mac, but WAS on my iPhone.

This suggests that the are not using the same database, and they absolutely must. Was the data file moved with the update? Where is the main data file?

I need both the desktop and the iPhone app to be using the same database and the data must sync. So if I add a password on the Mac, it must show up on the iPhone app. It was working before.

    Let me know.

    @z1pwduser‌

I'd like to ask you to create some Diagnostics Reports, one from each of your devices.

    —Mac—
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#mac4

    —iOS—
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#ios4

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

This way we can take a look at what your devices are reporting and let you know.

Is there a difference between uninstalling 1Password 3.0 and higher versions of 3?

@karay: Not at all. 1Password 3 is 1Password 3. 1Password 4 and 5 are fairly distinct, as major changes are made with brand new 'major' versions (as opposed to 'point' releases like 3.8.22). I hope this helps! :)
