Locked out of app

Hi, I havent used the iOS app in a long time and I have forgotten my password.
I don't mind to delete the app and create a new account, but I am worried about the passwords 'stuck' in the old account.
How can I erase all information from the app?

If you delete the app on your phone or iPad it will delete all data associated with it.

Yes but when you reinstall the passwords will be restored if you know the password right?

No. All data is deleted if you delete the app. If you re-install the newly installed app will start afresh: it will not find any old data. (I'm assuming you don't sync to a Mac or PC.)

I'm sure that when you delete the iOS app you can re-install, start afresh and, when you do so, set it up to sync from Dropbox and so import your old passwords. However, it won't find old data on your iDevice because that is deleted when you delete the app. (It doesn't work that way on a Mac, of course, but it's different with iOS apps. When you delete the app you'll see the warning that deletion will delete all data associated with the app.)

    This is a what-if situation:

    1. I delete 1password from my iphone, with the old password (because i forgot it i cant change it)
    2. I change the password of the Mac app
    3. I reinstall it on the iphone and use the old password

Does the iPhone app still work with the old password, or not because i changed it on the mac?

The re-installation on the iPhone is a completely new installation. You can set it up with any password you like: you will be starting completely afresh. However, when you sync to the iPhone from the Mac the Mac master password should sync to the iPhone. (There are currently some bugs, I believe, in the Dropbox sync of changed master passwords, so it's possible you may need to change the master password manually on the iPhone, following the sync, to match that on the Mac.)

It does seem to me that, given you can't use 1P on the iPhone currently, you have absolutely nothing to lose by simply deleting it and re-installing. I have assumed, in all of this, that you don't have the same problem with the Mac and can remember the master password for 1P on the Mac (which thus seems, for some odd reason, not to be the same as that on the iPhone!).

I need to be very clear about your exact problem.

    1. On the phone you can't remember the PIN (4 numbers) you use to open 1Password. Is that right?
    2. When you enter the incorrect PIN on the phone it should ask you for your master password. Are you saying that if you enter the same master password as on your Mac it does not work on the phone—even though you sync your Mac and phone via Dropbox?
    3. Did you recently change your master password on your Mac? If so, have you tried using the old master password to open 1P on your phone?

    1, thats right
2, it doesnt ask that. after the third try it freezes after the 'in 1 minute try again' message (closing and reopening helps until the 3rd try)
    3, no

OK, thanks for that: it's a little clearer now. :) However, I don't know why when you enter the incorrect PIN you are not prompted for your master password. I can't test it because on my phone I use touch ID and if I make that fail I am prompted for my master password.

I think the best thing to do is to wait (don't delete the iOS app for the moment) until someone from AgileBits comes along later in the day to provide some more expert advice than I can give. Sorry not to be able to help more!

I'll ping @Drew_AG‌ and @bwoodruff‌ to take a look at this when they arrive later.

I get the feeling we're talking about our old 1Password for iPhone here. To confirm can you specify which icon you have please.

    1. 1Password for iPhone (our old app)
    2. 1Password - Password Manager and Secure Wallet (our current app)

    Hi @iOShelp,

Thanks for confirming, that clears up some confusion. What you have on your iPhone is 1Password 3, which is an old version that worked very differently from newer versions (for example, in version 3, you won't be asked for your master password if you enter the wrong PIN code).

If you have all your up to date information in 1Password on your Mac and in Dropbox, there's no harm in deleting 1Password 3 from your iPhone and reinstalling it (from App Store > Updates > Purchased). That will allow you to set it up from scratch. The only problem is that Dropbox sync no longer works in 1Password 3 for iPhone, because of changes Dropbox made to their API more than a year ago.

The other sync option in 1Password 3 for iPhone is Wi-Fi sync, but that only works with 1Password 3 for Mac. Which version of 1Password do you have on your Mac? If you're not sure, open 1Password on your Mac and go to the menu for 1Password > About 1Password. If it's version 3, you can set up Wi-Fi sync with 1Password 3 on your iPhone by following the steps here.

On the other hand, if you have version 4 or 5 on your Mac, there are a couple other options we can go over. Let us know the version of 1Password on your Mac as well as which version of Mac OS you're running, and we'll take it from there. Thanks!

I have version 3 on my mac also.
how would the wifi sync help if im locked out of the ios app (to sync)?
also, if i am back in the ios app, will the dropbox sync work again? or is it disabled forever? no matter what version or device?

    Hi @iOShelp,

Wi-Fi sync won't help if you're locked out of the iOS app, which is why you'll need to delete 1Password 3 from your iPhone, then reinstall it (as I mentioned, this allows you to set it up from scratch on your iPhone). After deleting 1Password 3 from your iPhone, open the App Store and go to Updates > Purchased. Find 1Password 3 in your purchased apps and tap the icon to reinstall it.

When you open 1Password 3, you'll be able to set up the Unlock Code and Master Password. You should choose the same Master Password you use to unlock 1Password on your Mac. Once you've set up the app, you can set up Wi-Fi sync with 1Password 3 on your Mac.

As for Dropbox sync, that still works in 1Password 3 for Mac, but not 1Password 3 for iOS. We removed 1Password 3 for iOS from sale on the App Store way back in December 2012 when we released 1Password 4 for iOS, but Dropbox didn't announce the changes to their API until several months later (the changes went into effect in early September 2013). While we'd love to be able to update 1Password 3 for iOS to make it compatible with Dropbox's new API, we're just not able to, because apps removed from sale on the App Store cannot be updated.

I hope that helps to clear up some confusion, but let us know if you need more help. :)
