Populate specified character only fields

Hello there - I have just recently purchased this software.

On my bank log-in it asks me to enter only selected characters/digits from my password in separate fields e.g ' Enter the following characters from your Password: 1 7 3 / Enter the following digits of your Security number: 2 4 5.

Can I ask is there a way for 1Password to ingeniously auto populate these fields by recognising what character/digit is being requested and delivering it to the field

Many thanks

There is no way for 1Password to do that currently. The way some of us deal with that sort of challenge is to save the password in 1P and then, in a custom field under it, type 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, etc. under each character so we can find the relevant character easily. The alternative is to put both the password and the numbers in a secure note, where it may be easier to place the numbers under the relevant characters.

Edit: I meant to say "put both the password and the numbers in the note field of the relevant login item" - not "in a secure note". Thanks to those who commented!

Or put it in a note in the main login record.

Stephen_C and hawkmoth have already made some good suggestions.

I manually split such passwords into groups of five characters separated by a space like this:

This is quick to do, makes it easy to identify the required characters and works because you are never required to autofill the whole password anyway.

Maybe its a personal thing but I find this easier to deal with visually than putting numbers under every character. I also find the numbering approach gets a bit tricky when you get to the double digit numbered positions. I did experiment with a hybrid approach by putting 1, 5, 10, 20 etc above each group of five but stopped because it took too long and I found it didn't really make it any quicker to identify the required characters.

I recommend you keep the password in a password field rather than secure note because 1Password uses special fonts and colours to make sure you don't inadvertently confuse characters that look similar in the standard font used for notes fields e.g. 0 and O or 1 and I etc.

The ⌘ O anchoring keyboard shortcut in 1Password mini (that I only discovered recently) makes dealing with these sites a bit quicker too.

Sorry, I did mean to say a note in note field of the login item and not "in a secure note": apologies to one and all. I edited my original post accordingly.

I like your idea of grouping the characters @Penelope Pitstop‌ that would seem to mesh well with how our brains seem to work - very nice idea.

Would it be possible for 1Password to have a drop down option to highlight or filter password characters? Under the copy, reveal options perhaps a filter option that lets me specify an integer list of indexes I want to see?

    Hi @personalnadir,

We do want to try and come up with a system that works but it ideally has to be simple and intuitive, we just haven't settled on what that is yet.

This is really disappointing to me. I have just started using 1Password, thinking I was buying the best, but now I find I can't use it easily for all the accounts that I need the most protection on. I have three bank accounts and three brokers and they all require selected characters from my password. I think I have wasted my money.

    Hi @pvreed,

I'm sorry to hear you feel that way. Even if this particular aspect isn't automated at the moment the core functionality of the password manager is still there.

If I use a password manager my password can look like this:

    8wClC *EyN@ L(.C& N7F@H

while I can say with 100% confidence I'm not remembering that any time soon if forced to rely on my own memory. If that's the case then I'm using something easier to remember (in other words simple).

Bank sites are the hardest to be compatible with for a couple of reasons.

    1. We can't test their sites. It isn't like we can create a test account and creating a real account for even just the really major banks in countries where we're popular has a depressing amount of red tape and hurdles. We know because it's something Dave himself has looked into for this exact reason.
    2. They're also the most hostile sites we've come across, deploying some of the most awkward 'security' measures. I've never understood for one simple reason, it's almost as if they're trying to push people to simple passwords they don't need assistance with.

Despite that I still believe 1Password is essential, even if for a couple of sites the process isn't completely automatic.
