Upgrading from rev 3 to rev 5

I've been using 1Password 3 on one machine (a 2007 Mac mini). I bought a new Mac and imported the user data from the old one. But the new one runs Yosemite so I wanted to update to 1Password 5.

The instructions I found (but can't find again) said to delete the 1Password 3 instance (but not the data) before running 1Password 5. I removed the 1Password extension from all the browsers and then tried to follow the rest of the instructions. In the process, I may have started up 1Password 5 rather than 3 before recognizing my error and quitting. But eventually I deleted 1Password 3 and started it up 1Password 5.

It did not find any of the old data. It wanted a password so I had to go back to the AgileBits site to give it my 1Password 3 password and get the newer 1Password 4/5 password, When I gave it that, it was happy, but still hasn't recovered the old data. What do I do to get my data back? Typing it all in is NOT feasible. If I can't get the data that should be on the new machine to be seen by 1Password 5, what is the best way to get the data transferred from my old machine?

BTW, one of the things I noticed is that 1Password 3 installed itself in my personal Applications directory (/Users/admin/Applications) while 1Password 5 installed itself in the system Applications directory(/Applications). Does this have any impact on where the data is and how I get the data back into 1Password?

TIA.

    Hi @simplicitus‌,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us

Your 1Password 3 data should be stored in the form of a 1Password.agilekeychain file. It should be located in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ on your old Mac mini. If it's not there, please look Preferences > General > Data File

Is your 1Password.agilekeychain located in the same location on your new Mac too? If not, you need to copy it on to an external drive and then make it available for 1Password 5 on your new Mac. When you launch 1Password 5 for the first time it should find it and you'll be prompted to use your 1Password.agilekeychain to create your 1Password data from it as seen in the screenshot bellow. You simply need to enter your Master Password now for 1Password 5 to use the data migrated from 1Password 3.

    Hope that this helps

    Cheers!

Both machines have a 1Password.agilekeychain directory, On both machines the directory contains a 1Password.html file and three sub-directories: a, config, and data. Both data directories contain only one file, named "default" and about 3KB in length.

You wrote "If not, you need to copy it on to an external drive and then make it available for 1Password 5 on your new Mac." but what do I do given that one exists?

BTW, just to confuse matters, the new machine also has a "1Password 4" directory under ~/Library/Application Support/ It contains two sub-directories: Backups and Data.

    Hi @simplicitus‌,

Thanks for getting back to me :+1:

1Password 5 for Mac uses that same Application Support directory as 1Password 4 in order to facilitate the migration.

If I understood correctly, 1Password 5 on your new Mac already has been setup except that it didn't use that data from 1Password 3 on your old Mac. If that's the case, please make sure that your 1Password data is up-to-date and backed up. Then we'll start over on your new Mac by forcing it to use your agilekeychain from 1Password 3 from your old Mac.

    1. Please carefully read this article from our knowledge base to erase all of your local data for 1Password 5 on your Mac.
    2. After you reboot your Mac, please make sure that the agilekeychain from 1Password 3 from your old Mac is present on your new Mac.
    3. Launch 1Password 5 and make sure that it uses the right agilekeychain file as seen in the screenshot from my previous reply.
    4. Enter your Master Password and 1Password 5 for Mac will create a new local database ("~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data/") based on your agilekeychain.

Please let me know if this helped you solve the issue.

    Cheers!

It seems to be working now. I followed the instructions for starting over. The page was more than a little vague about where "1Password will find your data and prompt you for your Master Password." so I put it ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ now I have two directories under ~/Library/Application Support/, both 1Password and 1Password 4. 1Password contains only 1Password.agilekeychain and 1Password 4 contains only Data. Is this correct or should I be moving one or more of these files around (i.e. the 1Password.agilekeychain directory to 1Password 4)?

    Hi @simplicitus‌

When you start 1Password (regardless of the version) it will look and see if you've run any of the previous versions before and it looks in the default locations. So if 1Password 4/5 see that they haven't been run before and also find a ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ folder (indicating 1Password 3) they will import the vault but otherwise leave it untouched. So if you're telling us that when you open 1Password 5 that you see the entire contents of your old 1Password 3 vault then the import was successful and 1Password 5 is now maintaining its own copy independent of the 1Password 3 agilekeychain. Does this match your observations?

What that means is you could safely remove the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ folder and 1Password 5 would continue working. If you have any further questions do please ask away

Thank you but it isn't clear. There is no agilekeychain in the 1Password 4 directory. There is only the Data Is that OK? Does that mean 1Pasword 5 does not need an agilekeychain directory?

  • Hi @simplicitus,

That's right — 1Password 5 does not use the .agilekeychain package to store its local data. Your data is stored in the OnePassword.sqlite file (in the Data folder).
