Merge 1P3 Husband & Wife into 1P4 on Dropbox [resolving through email]

I read quite a bit on the website and forum, but decided my issue needs to be "plainly" stated for myself and others.

I had two 1P3 separate files in the past on separate MacBooks. The files were never closely synchroized.

I now have one 1P4 file running with husband 1P4 file with all passwords on Dropbox. Then, I created a second vault for wife and imported all her passwords into second vault.

How do I stop her 1P3/1P4 from pointing to old 1P4 file?

And start to point to new 1P4 file on Dropbox.

Do I merge or not ?

My 1P4 data file on Dropbox is one single file (1Password.agilekeychain), not separate ones for master vault and one for second vault. Is that right?

Thanks.

    Hi @a63rve‌

I do apologise, I'm a little confused. I am understanding correctly?

    • You are your wife have been running 1Password 3 with separate vaults.
    • You have taken the plunge and upgraded to 1Password 4 (don't forget, if you're running Yosemite then the 1Password 5 upgrade is free to licensed 1Password 4 users).
    • On your MacBook you've migrated your existing .agilekeychain as your new primary vault and you are now syncing that with Dropbox. You can confirm this by looking at the Sync tab of 1Password's preferences when in your primary vault.
    • You've then imported your wife's existing .agilekeychain as a secondary vault on this same computer?

and now you want to synchronise this secondary vault with Dropbox and have 1Password 4 on your wife's MacBook point to it?

Put it another way, is this your goal?

    • Wife's MacBook : Her Primary vault and syncing with Dropbox
    • Your MacBook : Your Primary vault, syncing to the same Dropbox account but then you want her vault as a Secondary vault on your MacBook?

Given the repercussions if I've misunderstood what you're trying to achieve I hope you understand why I ask before making any recommendations.

Once we have a better idea I'm sure we can guide you to your ideal setup.

    Hi @a63rve‌

I do apologise, I'm a little confused. I am understanding correctly?

EXACTLY! Why does an upgrade need to be this confusing ??

You are your wife have been running 1Password 3 with separate vaults.

We were running on two separate MacBooks with separate 1Password 3 files (?vaults??).

You have taken the plunge and upgraded to 1Password 4 (don't forget, if you're
running Yosemite then the 1Password 5 upgrade is free to licensed 1Password 4 users).
On your MacBook you've migrated your existing .agilekeychain as your new primary
vault and you are now syncing that with Dropbox.

Specifically, I "opened" my 1P3 1Password.agilekeychain file with 1P4 and moved that 1Password.agilekeychain file to Dropbox.

You can confirm this by looking at
the Sync tab of 1Password's preferences when in your primary vault.

Confirmed. It was last synced 14 seconds ago.

You've then imported your wife's existing .agilekeychain as a secondary vault on
    this same computer?

I exported her passwords to PIF folder/file and imported those passwords into the secondary vault in my 1P4 1Password.agilekeychain file on Dropbox.

and now you want to synchronise this secondary vault with Dropbox and have
1Password 4 on your wife's MacBook point to it?

How do I get her 1P4 to use the new secondary vault in my file on Dropbox ?? It asks about merging ???

I'm not sure why this seems so convoluted. Isn't this a natural for husband and wife to share the same 1Password.agilekeychain file with separate vaults on Dropbox ?

This really needs to be FAQ Quicksetup guide.

Put it another way, is this your goal?

Wife's MacBook : Her Primary vault and syncing with Dropbox

Wouldn't I logically want her to use the secondary vault of my 1Password.agilekeychain file so I can copy and move passwords to her vault when needed ?

Your MacBook : Your Primary vault, syncing to the same Dropbox account but then
you want her vault as a Secondary vault on your MacBook?

Now, I'm not sure I follow you.. Each of us will have 1P4 on our MacBooks using the same 1Password.agilekeychain file on Dropbox. I will use the primary vault everywhere and she will use a secondary vault everywhere. Is this what you meant?

Given the repercussions if I've misunderstood what you're trying to achieve I
hope you understand why I ask before making any recommendations.

Once we have a better idea I'm sure we can guide you to your ideal setup.>

The point is, why isn't there a quick guide FAQ for my question. It must be fairly common with 1Password customers.

    Hi @a63rve‌

There seems to be some confusion over how syncing works. In 1Password 3 your .agilekeychain was your vault but in 1Password 4/5 it is just the sync format used when syncing with Dropbox. Each vault is represented by its own .agilekeychain in Dropbox and 1Password will always title the .agilekeychain for the primary vault 1Password.agilekeychain

So each of you will need to keep separate 1Password.agilekeychains in a single Dropbox account (which means being careful) and then you want to add your wife's one as a secondary vault to your 1Password. While we cover the more common and simple sync configurations this one requires taking care otherwise you risk merging vaults when you didn't intend to.

As this has the potential to be quite involved I'd like to this to email and request that you do the following for us.

I'd like to ask you to create some Diagnostics Reports, one from each of your devices.

    —Mac—
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#mac4

Then attach the both entire files in an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com.

I know your machine has two vaults, the primary contains your items and your secondary contains your wife's items. If there is anything on your wife's vault please let us know whose items they are.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Once you've sent the Report a post here with the ticket ID will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

Troubleshooting report from both MacBooks have been sent ! This is quite the upgrade process moving from 1P3 to 1P4.

    Hi @a63rve‌

Can you post the ticket ID here please. I tried looking for both a link to this thread, your forum user name and the email address you use in the forums but no luck on any.

Synchronising one person's primary vault as a secondary for another person is always a tricky process but the actual upgrading process from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4/5 is meant to be pretty easy. Normally all you have to do is open 1Password 4/5 assuming your 1Password.agilekeychain from 1Password 3 is in one of the two default locations. Given what you've done so far though I didn't want to do anything until I had a much better idea of what was happening on each machine.

Ticket # 49209. Two emails, two debug logs, one from each MacBook

    Hi @a63rve‌

That's an odd ticket number. Standard format is a bit more like AAA-12345-678 - do you see anything like that in the email response you got from our BitBot assistant?

I see that Adam ( @littlebobbytables ) located your email with the reports and has sent you a reply. We'll continue working with you directly in email to resolve the issue and I'll close this discussion so we're not getting wires crossed between here and there. :)
