Cannot sync between macbook and iPhone 5s

I previously asked this question. I made the question confusing by bringing in the word Dropbox.
The responder thought I was saying I want to use Dropbox to sync. I do not.
I want the mac and iPhone to sync through the Cloud just as it has for months.
Apple made me change my password which I did on my Mac.
I went to 1Password on my phone to get the new password so I could put it in on my phone.
The new password did not sync into 1Password on my phone.
I revealed the new password on my mac and typed it in on my phone. It did not work and I'm sure---because I checked closely, that I typed it correctly.
I am 100% sure I have the latest 1Password version and I have the latest iOS version.
Something happened when I was required to put the new Apple password in, and I did it on my mac, but it did not sync over to my phone.
By the way, I did delete 1Password on my phone and then downloaded it again thinking it might sync but it did not.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

I just want to be absolutely clear about what you're asking.

    1. I'm assuming your 1P data syncs successfully between your Mac and your phone (except as mentioned in 2). Is that correct?
    2. The only problem is that a change to the master password on your Mac does not sync to your phone. Is that correct?

If that is the case note that with the current versions of 1P for Mac and 1P for iOS changes to master passwords fail to sync via iCloud. That problem is apparently fixed in newer versions of both apps which are expected to be released in the near future, The current work around is to change your master password manually on your phone to match that on your Mac.

If I've misunderstood your question do please post again.

  • Hi @denssull,

Thanks for writing in. Assuming I'm reading this correctly, my response would look exactly as @stephen_c's response looks like. Can you confirm that we're interpreting this correctly and that data syncs, but the master password did not sync over?

Thanks for trying to help me with this. I apologize for not being more clear. The Master PW works fine on both Mac and phone.
The issue is, if a password stored within 1P is changed on the mac, the changed password does not sync to the phone as it did before I was required to change my mac password.

    Hi @denssull

I checked our records and I found a purchase for 1Password 5 made late last year. I'm not sure if you've made previous purchases but as of Yosemite and iOS 8 iCloud access has been restricted to Apple Mac App Store (MAS) purchases. As a result this means our Agile Web Store (AWS) version can't use the CloudKit framework. If you've been syncing via iCloud for months I can only guess that you were previously still running Mavericks and using your 1Password 5 licence on 1Password 4 (certainly a possibility). Now the AWS version can still sync using either Dropbox or Wi-Fi with your iOS devices, how do you feel about changing to Dropbox?

Thank you for your response. I do not understand what CloudKit framework means. I also don't know what AWS version means. I began with Dropbox on my Macbook whenever your records say I purchased it and I downloaded the 1Password app for my phone at the time. Like I say it synched wonderful until I was required to change my Apple ID password. I have no opposition to Dropbox and use it to store many documents. Where are instructions to synching using Dropbox? I do not want to change anything with 1Password on my Mac as it is working wonderful and I have a large number of passwords in there and don't want to disrupt that. So if using Dropbox does anything with the 1Password on my Mac I do not want to do it.

    Hi @denssull‌

    • CloudKit is the name Apple gave to their new sync framework that is part of their new iCloud. We moved to using their CloudKit framework as it's meant to be significantly better for syncing. The downside we discovered was it was limited to Yosemite and iOS 8 and to applications purchased directly from one of Apple's stores.
    • AWS is the abbreviation for Agile Web Store, the title we use when we're referring to users that purchased 1Password directly from our store. This is in contrast to Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) which is what we say when somebody purchased 1Password from Apple's Mac App Store.

So what happened is iCloud Sync was working for users of 1Password 4 with Mavericks but when Apple released the new iCloud it all became messy. Those users have one of three options.

    1. If they'd purchased 1Password (AWS) in the last 30 days they could ask for a refund to buy the MAS version.
    2. If they felt really strongly about iCloud Sync support they would need to purchase the MAS version as we can't migrate AWS users to the MAS version.
    3. If they didn't feel strongly about iCloud Sync support then they could move to Dropbox.

All of our guides have been updated for the release of our new Mac and iOS versions today. So the first thing I would recommend is upgrading 1Password on all of your iOS devices and Mac machines.

To switch to Dropbox on your Mac this guide, Switching to Dropbox should contain everything you need.

To switch to Dropbox on your iOS device this guide, Switching to Dropbox should contain everything you need.

If you have any questions from any of that do please ask. I've pointed you to the guides because our amazing writers have taken the time to include lots of screenshots which can often really help when following the steps.

I'm having a related problem with the Mac desktop v 3.8.22 and the current iOS app. I'm running 10.7.5 on a MBP, the latest iOS on an iPhone 5S, and trying to sync via wifi. While your instructions are clear, here and on the iOS app, they don't match each other, nor what is actually in the Mac application. On your website, https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac/5/en/topic/sync-wi-fi, you state I should go to the wifi server prefs pane within the app's preferences. Such a beastie doesn't exist in my version. The iOS app tells, me, under the Wi-Fi Sync preference pane, to access the Window>Wi-Fi Sync item on the desktop app. No dice finding that, either.

I'm not a big fan of having my data in iCloud nor Dropbox, for anything that I care about. Hoping you can enlighten me as to how I can overlook such an obvious feature as the baked in wifi sync touted in the various help guides. I'm more than happy to provide screen captures, or to communicate with you by email.

BTW -- why don't you have a support contact form on your support pages? If by blogging/wiki'ing all this, we document for other users, I 'get' that. Perhaps adding that to the support pages would be helpful for the clueless such as me :)

Ah -- I see something interesting now. Your online documentation is only for the latest version of 1password, v5. So if I store my vault on a different location on my iPhone, how may I wifi sync?

  • Hi @afterhours,

Unfortunately 1Password for Mac 3 cannot Wi-Fi sync with 1Password for iOS 5. We completely redesigned how Wi-Fi sync worked in 1Password 4. I believe your only option for syncing 1Password for Mac 3 and 1Password for iOS 5 would be via Dropbox/AgileKeychain.

As for support contact... we do offer email support, but we prefer forums as users tend to get answers faster this way since it doesn't rely on us providing the answer all the time. There are great forum users from the community that help us out.

    I hope this helps.

    Rick
