Cannot sync 1Password 4 for Mac with 1Password 5 for iOS via iCloud [working as intended]

Why do Mac developers have such a tough time realizing that not everyone flocks to the newest OS the moment it's released.

I just spent entirely too much time trying to figure out why iPassword wasn't syncing, only to realize it was because all my IOS devices had updated to 5, and my Macs (running Mavericks) were on 4 (and will have to STAY of 4, because 5 for Mac is Yosemite-only).

Having FINALLY figured out the problem, and manually downgrading to 1P 4.x in iTunes (thank goodness I had a back up that had the old version, because getting older version of IOS apps is like questing for the grail), I now have to manually update ALL my apps in iTunes so 1P doesn't update itself again (which takes forever and is HIGHLY annoying!). THis makes a huge headache on both platforms. Not to mention, the TouchID was awesome, and I can't use it. Boo.

So you made 1P 5 on IOS not play with 1P 4 Mac, but users can't use 1P5 on Mavericks. Really well thought-out, guys.

  • Hi @Mithical,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble.

1Password 5 uses some technologies only available in Yosemite, so unfortunately won't be available to Mavericks users.

If you're still using Mavericks or an older system, the previous versions of 1Password should continue to work for you just fine. 1Password 5 is compatible with the old versions, except for the iCloud sync.

In 1Password 5, iCloud sync was rewritten from the ground up to use CloudKit, a new technology from Apple that’s built into OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and iOS 8. CloudKit is not available on OS X 10.9 or iOS 7. If you don't wish to upgrade to Yosemite at this time, we recommend using Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync instead.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. We're always happy to help!

Actually, 1P4 and my IOS8 devices sync beautifully over iCloud. That's not my issue. Kindly read the post. (Why do support people never seem to actually read the question posed and answer that question instead of something I didn't ask? Do you just look for keywords and paste in answers? It's remarkably poor service in any case.)

The issue is that the APP still insists on auto updating itself to 1P5 on my devices (and in my iTunes). If this happens, I have to deinstall it from those devices, reinstall my (now backed up in nine different places), copy of 1P4 into iTunes, reinstall it on my device, and resync the whole bloody thing. Clearly not a daily operation, yeah?

And no, BTW, 1P5 on IOS does NOT sync with 1P4 on Mac OSX, via ANY method. Believe me, I spent plenty of time trying after I was locked out because neither my iPhone or iPad had the passwords I needed, having failed to sync via dropbox (my long-standing sync method for the years I've used 1P so far) to a rather spectacular degree. And none of your Knowledge base docs indicate that it does or should. The fairly uniform position is 'make sure all versions are the latest.'

Hours of frustration have assured me that I need to keep 1P4 on ALL devices, OSX or IOS for any sync to work. However, in order for 1P on my devices to NOT update, so as to continue to play nice with 1P on my Macs (regardless of HOW I sync), I have to manually update every other app in iTunes. This takes bleeding forever, and it's annoying as heck. If you are going to make an update that is not backward compatible, it behooves you to make sure users don't have to jump through hoops to AVOID the update.

Or, better yet, since you should KNOW that the Apple store/iTunes pushes updates like a crack dealer, you should have thought of this, and not released the update unless 1P5 on IOS could still work with 1P4 on Mac OS. I'm not sure how you're not seeing that you just really kind of pooped on a lot of users that have bajillions of reasons for not moving to Yosemite, but you did. Users who didn't catch this fast enough may no longer even be able to FIND a copy of 1P4 for IOS to downgrade to; I was lucky and had a backup.

I'm not going to attempt to answer your post because I don't work for AgileBits: I'm merely a volunteer here. However, I will comment on this:

You do a serious injustice to both the level and quality of support that AgileBits provides on its forums—seven days a week and pretty well at all hours. @JasperP is one of those who provides first class support here.

Perhaps if you compare your own posting style to that of others you may see why it's harder, when reading your posts, for those working on support to detect the core problem you are experiencing.

Let me add that AgileBits has nothing to do with how Apple handles pushing updates to iOS devices. There isn't anyway to turn that off. 1Password is not the only app where some users would prefer not to update, yet are continuously pestered by the App Store app to do so. I don't think AgileBits could do anything about this if they wanted to.

I suspect you have allowed auto-update somewhere in your settings. Certainly on my iDevices, where I always download via iTunes on my Mac, I get told "Can update" and if I click then get told "will update", I have never had an update forced on me without my request.

And for apps on my Mac itself, I have some set to auto-update and others set for manual updates only.

As hawkmoth says, one can get "pestered" to update, but not "forced" to do so.

I now wish I had not updated the OS on my old iPad, as it is supposed to work better on the older one, but I was certainly asked if I wanted to update, so it was my own fault.

    Hi @Mithical,

I am sorry to hear that you've been having trouble here.

As Jasper has mentioned above, Apple has re-written iCloud completely between iOS 7/ OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and iOS 8/ OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), so iCloud cannot be used to sync across 1Password 4 and 1Password 5. However, you should have no trouble syncing 1Password 5 for iOS and 1Password 4 for Mac via Dropbox. If you are having difficulty here, we'd be more than happy to troubleshoot the issue so that you can have the awesomeness of Touch ID on your iOS devices.

Here are some basic steps to get started, before we get into the serious troubleshooting. Some of these are going to be a bit basic, but it helps to go through each one:

    • Please ensure that Dropbox is installed and running on your computer
    • Check that you are logged in with the same account on all computers and devices
    • Confirm that Dropbox sync is selected in 1Password > Preferences > Sync on your Mac
    • Confirm that Dropbox is selected in Settings > Sync on your iOS device
    • Confirm that both your Mac and iOS device are reading from the same file path in Dropbox.

If all of those items check out, let's run a test and see where things are getting tripped up:

    • Create a test entry on your Mac ("Test, Mac") and add some data
    • Create a test entry on each of your iOS devices ("Test, iPhone/iPad") and add some data
    • Does "Test for Mac" show up on either of your iOS devices?
    • Does "Test for iPhone" and/or "Test for iPad" show up on your Mac?
    • Log in to the Dropbox website and click on the 1Password.html file inside your 1Password.agilekeychain folder
    • Enter your Master Password
    • Do either or any of your test entries show up in your database here?

Please let me know the results of this little experiment - once we have a better idea of where things are going sideways, we should be able to get this straightened out simply for you :)
