Need advice on complex upgrade situation

Hi all, first time poster here on the agilebits forums.

I've been using 1Password for several years now (according to my 1Password license entry stored conveniently in 1Password, since August 2011) and I love it. It has made my life much easier as a security conscious person. However, I use a lot of different computers and mobile devices, and my wife does as well. Somehow we got to this point where we have a variety of different versions in use depending on the targeted OS. At this point, I would like to upgrade to the latest versions of 1Password for all of our computers and devices, but I am not sure what the best/cheapest route is going to be to get that done. So let me lay out what we have currently, and the devices that I need licenses for:

iPhone:

  • iPhone 6+ (iOS 8.1.2): 1Password 5.1.2
  • iPhone 4S (iOS 7.1.2): 1Password 5.1.2 (same Apple account as for above)

iPad:

  • 2x iPad Air: 1Password 5.1.2, using the same Apple account as the iPhones (so only purchased once)

Android:

  • Nexus 5 (Android 5.0 "Lollipop"): I think this phone has the old, read-only version of 1Password for Android
  • Galaxy S5 (Android 4.4.2 "KitKat"): None installed yet

Macs:

  • My Personal Laptop (MacOS 10.9, likely to upgrade to 10.10 soon): 1Password 3.??
  • My Company Laptop (MacOS 10.10): 1Password 5.0.2 trial (expired)

Win:

  • My Personal Laptop's Windows Install (Windows 8): 1Password 3.??
  • My Company Laptop's Windows Install (Windows 8.1): None installed yet
  • Wife's Company Laptop (Windows 8.1): 1Password 3.??

We currently have two separate vaults (one for her and one for me) and I like the "multi-vault" feature on 1Password 5 for iPhone. In the near future I may split that into more vaults (e.g., Wife Business, Wife Personal, Me Business, Me Personal). Is the "multi-vault" feature available on Windows, MacOS and Android as well?

We are using Dropbox for sync. Is that still a good/best option? Is it possible to improve the "multi-vault" experience (e.g., integrated viewing of all vaults, searching across vaults?) by using a different sync option? Or should I be pursuing a different strategy for multi-vault?

EDIT: Fixed formatting of device list

Also, I have been using a single license for the Macs and a single license for the Windows machines. I'm not sure if I should be purchasing a single license, or a family license, and if there is an option for upgrading from an old single license to a new family license.

    Hi @27ea1f7c,

Thanks for taking time to write such a detailed outline of your setup! I'd be happy to answer your questions here:

I would like to upgrade to the latest versions of 1Password for all of our computers and devices, but I am not sure what the best/cheapest route is going to be to get that done.

    iOS:

    • 1Password 5 for iOS (latest version 5.1.2) is a freemium app - you can download the app for free on all your iOS 8 devices. Pro features can be unlocked for a one-time in app purchase. You can find 1Password 5 for iOS in the iOS App Store
    • For older iOS devices, you'll need to remain with 1Password 4 for iOS.

    Android:

    Mac:

    • 1Password 5 for Mac is the latest and greatest version of 1Password, and it is designed to work and look wonderful in the latest OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). As a 1Password 3 owner, you're entitled to an upgrade discount. Just enter your current license information on our upgrade page to see your available discount.
    • For OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), you'll want 1Password 4, as version 5 requires Yosemite. The upgrade license for 1Password 5 will also work for 1Password 4. You can download 1Password 4 for your Mavericks machine on our downloads page - simply scroll to the bottom for Legacy versions.

    Windows:

    • 1Password 4 for Windows is the latest version of 1Password for Windows. When you head to our upgrade page to upgrade your Mac license, you can select the Mac+Windows bundle to get both the upgrade discount as well as a bundle discount.

Is the "multi-vault" feature available on Windows, MacOS and Android as well?

1Password 5 for Mac has support for multiple vaults. 1Password 4 for Windows can open more than one datafile, but vaults look slightly different here: on Mac, your secondary vaults are all unlocked when you enter the Master Password for your primary vault. In 1Password for Windows, you use the File > Open Datafile menu to select which vault you would like to open, and then unlock that vault with its Master Password. 1Password 4 for Android does not have multiple vault support, but it's something that our developers are hoping to add soon.

We are using Dropbox for sync. Is that still a good/best option? Is it possible to improve the "multi-vault" experience (e.g., integrated viewing of all vaults, searching across vaults?) by using a different sync option?

For all of the platforms that you use, Dropbox really is your best bet. Dropbox also has the the most advanced support for multiple vaults - we're working to improve Wi-Fi sync to be a powerful alternative, but for now, Dropbox is where its at.

I hope this answers your questions, but if you would like any further clarification, we're here for you!

Thanks Megan! Exactly what I was looking for. Just to be clear, if I buy the 1Password Mac 3->5 upgrade, I can use that same license with 1Password 4 for Mac on my older Macs? And the Mac+Win bundle will let me get upgrade pricing on both the Mac and the Win licenses?

  • On behalf of Megan you are very welcome!

A 1Password 5 for Mac license will work on 1Password 4 for Mac, yes.

And the Mac+Win bundle will let me get upgrade pricing on both the Mac and the Win licenses?

    Also correct.

Excellent, thank you guys very much. 1Password is a beacon of great software, and AgileBits keeps finding ways to make it better. I absolutely love the TouchID integration on my iPhone, and there's so many other things I can't do without. You can quote me on that if you have a "testimonials" section :) What's the best way to put up reviews for your apps, BTW? Just Mac App Store, iOS App Store, and Google Play? Anywhere else? I'm just not sure if I will be able to review it on the Mac App Store since I will be buying through the site in order to receive upgrade/bundle pricing.

And one last thing while I have you, the one gap I have found in my password management experience is that of sharing credentials and sensitive information between business associates. I looked into that last year, and there are some options, but none of them impressed me enough to even bother trying them out. Does AgileBits have any plans for a system of that nature, or a partner company that is working on such a thing? Credentials and sensitive information management for small to medium sized software businesses is a big pain point for me, as well as for many of my friends and current and former co-workers.

EDIT: Regarding testimonials, I can provide a real name for that too if needed.

Have you looked at the multiple vault feature of 1P? (Sorry if you knew about it already but it seems to me to be relevant to what you'd like to do.)

Stephen, yes, I use that with my wife, but for business applications, I would prefer something with a stronger permissions scheme and more robust user account system. I want to be able to have everyone in the business have their own accounts, and the ability for administrative users to permit or deny access to certain entries based on the user, or on group affiliations, that sort of thing. Among other things, that will allow an administrator to cut someone off after they leave the company, as well as help compartmentalize secure information while making it easy to get it to the people who need it.

Like I said, there are solutions designed to do that out there, I just didn't like any of them, so I was hoping AgileBits was working on something, since I know they can deliver the good stuff :)

Hi @27ea1f7c‌ Thanks for the suggestion. At the moment we're a consumer company but it certainly is something to consider.
