1Password 5.1 Secure Notes editing problems

1Password
Version 5.1 (510027)
Mac App Store
OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1

The editor is still misbehaving in this latest update.

  • Create a secure note with a lot of lines.
  • Save the note.
  • Scrolling through the note shows no problems.
  • Edit the note.
  • Scrolling through the note does not repaint all of the lines as they are scrolling.

The only way to edit a long note is:

  • Scroll to the part of the note you want to change.
  • Edit the note.
  • Make your changes without scrolling via mouse or keyboard
  • Save your change
  • Scroll until the next piece you want to change is visible.
  • Edit the note, etc.

This makes updating notes very time consuming.

Also, still patiently waiting for some font control for those of us that can't edit anything in 1Password without constantly fighting with the zoom controls built into OS X. Would love to be able to use Markdown in secure notes as well, but font control or at least allowing us to select a minimum font size that is global to the application would really, really help.

I also have screenshots of the above repainting problem if you want them.

The colors you're using, light gray on a white background are unusable. It would be nice if you could add something like a low vision mode that leaves everything black and white without all the low contrast colors. I've had the same complaint with Apple for years and years but I've given up hope that Apple will ever make things usable to those of us that haven't completely lost all our vision yet. I have much more hope that this will also eventually get fixed in a future release.

    Hi @ZamboniMan‌

Thanks for checking in on us! Unfortunately, I don't have much of an update for you on this Secure Note glitch right now, but I'll be sure to mention to our developers that you're keen to see a fix here just as soon as possible.

Your feedback here is much appreciated!

Thank you @Megan. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. I've already sent a diagnostics report earlier today regarding another problem if that helps.

    Hi @ZamboniMan‌

Thanks for your diligence! A Diagnostics Report won't help much for the Secure Notes issue: our developers know that it's a bit messy and they're currently searching for a proper solution.

I'm sure our team will have your other issue sorted out real soon. :)

There is a severe issue with secure notes in the desktop app.

If you open a note for editing and then scroll up, the note goes blank. If you save and reopen the note, all of the text is still there until you type enough that it goes off the screen. Then you have to save and reopen the note.

The previous update had strange line artifacts all over the text but this is rendering the note text unreadable.

    Is this a known issue?

    Hi @CalH,

I've merged your message with the thread Stephen linked to, since it is the same issue. I'm sorry for the inconvenience! Our developers are working on this and will hopefully have it fixed sometime soon. Thanks for your patience! :)

Experiencing same issues discussed above on 1Password 5 Version 5.1 (510035) Agile Web Store update. Kind of a large issues 4 me as I only use Secure Notes. FYI, tried 'Optimizing Database', it resulted in NO change in behavior.

    Hi @dproffer‌

It's a rendering issue so the Optimize Database function won't help. It's a bug that we're aware of and that we know we need to resolve it. Until we get it fixed and the fix released though it will continue to be a source of frustration for you.

May I ask though. If all you use 1Password for is Secure Notes it seems like you're not really taping into the power or purpose of 1Password. If you're only after a way to store multiple documents in an encrypted container there's probably a better alternative we can suggest? It's entirely up to you of course, it all depends on your needs.

Well, this is frustrating. Thanks to this bug not allowing me to edit my secure notes properly, I've now inadvertently lost most of one of my notes, and a very important one at that. Not sure what to do now, maybe I can recover a previous version of the note? This bug is incredibly frustrating, hopefully someone is working on it.

Edit: I was able to recover the note from a recent automated backup! Thanks to 1password for a great backup system. :)

    Hi @anonymous6453,

I can confirm these bugs are being actively worked on and I believe we're making some good progress in the betas at the moment. I'm glad the backup system was able to save the day for you

Happy to report that the difficulty over editing long secure notes appears to be fixed in this release.

The release notes make mention of new features like added sections and fields for secure notes, however, you're still using light gray text on a white background in a lot of places which makes the text unreadable. So if these new features are truly there, I have no idea where they are hiding. It is hard to recommend this software to a few friends that are just as blind as I am. Even if you try to invert colors, the very light gray text on a black background is just as invisible.

Still hoping for font control as well so we can pick a minimum font size.

    Hi @ZamboniMan,

When you edit a Secure note do you see anything like this screenshot?

The bit I've circled in red is where you can add custom sections and fields to a Secure Note now, just like Login items etc.

I've seen a couple of comments about text recently so it is something we're looking into. I'll add your comment to the request

I see a red circle with a blurry smudge in the middle.

  • Hi ZamboniMan,

Can you get us a screenshot of what it looks like on your display? Just so that we can confirm that we're seeing the same thing.

The lighter gray is used as these are placeholders, they're meant to be replaced by the user with real titles.

I tried capturing with inverted colors which is even harder to read but the screenshot comes out the same,

Placeholders or not, a low vision setting that uses a different way to indicate it is a placeholder would be better. Look at the way the contacts app works. The labels are blue and even if you can't see the fields to enter data clearly, you have a better idea of where to click instead of having to randomly click all over the place hoping to activate the edit field like some of us have to do at the moment.

The edit fields are another color issue. Just like this forum, it would be nice if the edit field were outlined in blue when you activate it instead of the invisible gray smudge that is there now.

    Hi @ZamboniMan ,

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here. You're not the first one to comment on our monochromatic design, and I can see how it might be difficult to see for some users. I've filed an improvement request in our internal issue tracker, and I'll make sure that our development team hears your thoughts.
