Can't sync with iCloud -- Can I fix that, or is there another way to sync two vaults?

I presently have one vault, which is synced via Dropbox. I want to create a second vault and sync it with my spouse. From what I've read, I /think/ I understand that the only way to do that is to have my Primary vault synced via iCloud, and then sync the new vault via Dropbox, using a shared folder.

First question-- is that correct? Is this the only way to do it? Is there no way, for example, to sync two vaults in different folders within the same DropBox account?

Assuming I got that right, my first step would be to move my Primary vault sync from Dropbox to iCloud. Right off the bat, I've run into a problem on my MacBook-- iCloud sync is not available to me at all. I think I understand that this may be because I bought my OSX copy of 1Password directly from Agilebits, rather than through the Mac AppStore. (For now, I will suppress my urge to angrily rant about this!!! >_< ) Note that my iOS copy of 1Password /was/ purchased through the iOS AppStore. When I first started using 1Password many years ago, I don't even think it was /offered/ in the Mac/OSX AppStore...

So, the second question is-- Can I do something to work around this? Is there was to re-purchase via the AppStore, and get the purchase refunded? Can AgileBits send me a code to use in the AppStore to get the app without charge (after verifying my existing license, of course)? Or am I just flat stuck because I had the temerity to purchase something outside Apple's holy sanctum??

Any advice would be heartily appreciated, even if it is a confirmation of my worst fears...

Chris

No, your fine with how things are currently

    • iCloud will only sync one vault period. You could add Dropbox to the mix if needed but since you already have a vault on Dropbox. I personally would have all of them sync via Dropbox.

You can indeed sync multiple vaults through Dropbox. I have 13 of them about 8 are synced.

What version of iOS and OS X are you using and then the version of 1Password. * Just to make sure we don't have any unexpected hiccups before we discuss the setup.

    Outstanding!

I have two Macs, and with the second vault synching with my spouse, I'll have three -- all are running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I have 2 iOS devices, and that'll grow to four, all of which are running 8.1.2 or 8.1.3.

I'm so glad I misunderstood! :chuffed: Looking forward to your advice!

    Hi @chris068

I'm going to assume you're running 1Password 5.1 for Mac on your machines.

Here's our guide to Create a new vault and here is our guide to Share a vault.

The trick is to ensure you save the .agilekeychain for the vault you wish to share in a folder. You can't share a file in Dropbox, just folders and hierarchy is important too, if you're sharing /Dropbox/Folder A/ then you can't share a folder inside there e.g. /Dropbox/Folder A/Sub-Folder. That means you can't store your two .agilekeychains in the same folder if you only want to share the secondary vault. The second guide will cover all of this including how to add a secondary vault to your spouse's 1Password.

If you have any questions regarding any of the steps do please ask

Business travel kept me from trying this out, but I finally did. It works flawlessly. Thank you very much for your help! :) And I'm sorry I omitted the 1Password version that @thightower asked for... You guessed correctly, in any case, @littlebobbytables. I'm golden now!

  • That's great news, thanks for updating us on your progress and on behalf of the team here, you're welcome!
