Lost Data - Need to Restore from iPhone

I just converted my sync from dropbox to icloud. It seemed to work fine when I tested it, but now on my mac I am missing some entries that appear on the iphone. I deleted 1password from the mac and reloaded it, but it came back with an old version of the data. How can I sync from the iphone to the Mac so I don't lose recent changes? Also, I need to set this up correctly so I don't lose the data again. Thank you

    Hi @Bob P

    I would suggest the following.

    1. Disable iCloud Syncing on your iPhone.
    2. Use the Erase iCloud Data option in 1Password > Settings > Advanced
    3. Follow our Starting Over guide to remove the old vault from your Mac.
    4. Make sure you don't have any .agilekeychains in your Dropbox.
    5. Set up iCloud sync on your iPhone.

At this stage, when you start 1Password it should pick up your iCloud data and request the password for that.

Let us know how you get along. If anything I've written results in follow up questions or you need something covered in more detail just ask

Hi. Everything was fine through step 5. When I restarted the computer and started 1Password 5 from my applications folder, as expected it asked me to 'if I have used 1Password' before. I said yes. It didn't ask me 'where is my data?' and give me an option for the cloud. Instead it asked for 'Another device' and gave me options for dropbox, this mac, another device or restore from backup. I clicked on 'other device' and 'More Information' and it brought me to instructions that indicated it would ask if I wanted to sync with iCloud. It didn't offer iCloud as an option. Is there another setting somewhere that would enable it to recognize iCloud? My computer is enabled under Apple > System Preferences > iCloud. It worked with iCloud before and I didn't change anything.

    Hi @Bob P,

Your earlier post mentions deleting and reinstalling 1Password as well - where did you download the replacement copy of 1Password from?

It sounds to me like you might be using the AgileBits webstore version of 1Password, which is unable to support iCloud sync. Where did you originally purchase 1Password for Mac from? Was it from the Mac App Store or directly from our website?

Hi, It believe I downloaded it from the agilebits website. I purchased the license once from apple - perhaps it was the iphone version. But, when I went to the Apple store recently to download the mac version, it wanted me to pay for it again (I already paid for it twice). That is why I ended up downloading it from the agilebits website.

Hi @Bob P, I apologise for the confusion but I believe we've found the source of the issue.

In 1Password 4 both Agile Web Store (AWS) and Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) users could access iCloud and sync 1Password using it.

This all changed with the release of Yosemite and iOS 8. Apple updated iCloud and released something called the CloudKit framework but only for the newest of their operating systems. We make use of the CloudKit framework for syncing, part of the reason 1Password 5 is Yosemite and iOS 8 only. So far no problem. The gotcha is Apple restricted access to this framework to apps and applications purchased through their stores. So our AWS users who had been using iCloud Sync in 1Password 4 were denied in 1Password 5. For more on this change I would suggest reading the announcement by Dave Teare, iCloud Changes in the Website Version of 1Password 5. On top of that the change in how iCloud syncs at all meant 1Password 5 couldn't sync with 1Password 4 using iCloud (regardless of platform).

So 1Password 5 for iOS will happily sync to iCloud as every iOS app is only available from an Apple store, specifically iTunes. As an AWS customer though you won't be able to sync the Mac any more using this particular method.

    There are two main options.

    1. If you're tied to iCloud Sync it would require the purchase of our MAS version of 1Password 5. Unfortunately there is no way to transfer an AWS licence to a MAS one (this is covered in the announcement). We did have the MAS version on sale for a while but that ended some time ago as iOS and Yosemite were released in Sept and Oct respectively last year.
    2. A change in the sync method used. While iCloud has been removed as an option Dropbox is available as an alternative cloud sync method and there is also 2. if you want to keep a single Mac in sync with multiple iOS devices.

If you're amenable to option 2 then we can definitely help you there. This is our guide for Sync with Dropbox (iOS) and that will create the .agilekeychain in Dropbox that you'll need to get 1Password for Mac working again for you. As an iCloud user in the past this option, once set up, should be fairly comfortable given it works a lot like iCloud.

If you have any questions regarding any of this please do ask.

Thank you. I think it may make sense for me to get the cloud version from Apple and sync using the iCloud. The one thing that started this is that my wife uses my 1password license (on a PC and iPhone) and she has a different iCloud account. Is there a way for us to sync via iCloud when we are both on different iCloud accounts. I could use drop box, but I started to get unreliable results with it.

    Hi @Bob P ,

Unfortunately, iCloud is not quite suited to your situation, for two reasons:

    • iCloud sync does not have the ability to sync between different iCloud accounts.
    • iCloud sync is not available for 1Password for Windows. While iCloud Drive was recently made available on Windows, 1Password's sync uses CloudKit, which is separate. (I know, it's confusing!)

So, I would strongly recommend looking into Dropbox as a possible solution. Our developers have done some great work strengthening sync lately and making it more reliable, so you should have a seamless experience across your Mac, iOS and Windows devices.

Of course, if you do hit any snags, we're here to help you. :)
