Changing sync from folder to iCloud query

Hi, any help will be most welcome. I've been using 1Password on my Mac for about 2 years. I've only just got the iPhone app and I'd like to sync my passwords. When I try to change the current Sync type from "folder" to "iCloud" I get a message telling me that I'm about to disable sync and that my folder will be moved to trash. I don't understand this and I'm concerned that I'll lose my data if I go ahead. I'm using 1Password 5.1 from the Mac App store on my Mac and the version 5.2 on my iPhone 5s. My iMac runs OS X Yosemite v10.10.2.

    Hi @KeithH,

When you change from Folder to iCloud sync in 1Password, the message should tell you that it will no longer sync your vault with that folder, and it will give an option to delete the data from that folder. That message is referring to the sync file (.agilekeychain) located in the folder. You don't have to delete it, but even if you do, that will not delete your data stored in 1Password (which stores its data separately). It will only delete the sync data from the folder currently selected in the Folder Sync settings.

Are you currently using Folder Sync to sync your 1Password data to another computer? If not, you can go ahead and choose to delete it when changing the sync option to iCloud (1Password will create new sync data in iCloud). But like I said, you don't have to delete the Folder Sync data if you don't want to - that option is un-checked by default.

I hope this helps clear up the confusion, but please let us know if you have more questions about that. :)

Thanks for your swift reply Drew, it's helped me to better understand what's happening. I hadn't realised that the delete check box was an option - I thought it must be part of the necessary procedure and I was also concerned by the message telling that sync would be disabled. I guess from your info that if I did go ahead and disable sync it would be re-enabled via iCloud and I wouldn't lose any of my data. However, since I posted my query I managed to sync my iPad and iPhone using wifi so I'm not sure I really need to use iCloud now.

    Hi @KeithH,

I'm glad to hear that Drew has been able to help you out here.

if I did go ahead and disable sync it would be re-enabled via iCloud and I wouldn't lose any of my data.

With 1Password you always have a 'local' copy of your data tucked away in the /Application Support folder. When you choose to sync, 1Password will make a copy of this data and store it in the appropriate location for syncing. So, when you disable sync and choose the option to delete the data, you are only removing the sync copy of the data. The local data remains intact.

However, since I posted my query I managed to sync my iPad and iPhone using wifi so I'm not sure I really need to use iCloud now.

I'm thrilled that Wi-Fi is working for you. :)
