Hi Agailebits -- I'm preparing to purchase a version of Password1, need your help to assess which. I am currently on OS X 10.7.5 Lion - I do not want to upgrade to Yosemite quite yet due to lose of 3rd party software/hardware, compatibility and OSX potential bug issues. I have been researching to assess which of older versions to select, namely is it important to spend the cost/effort to upgrade my entire system OSX to Mountain Lion 10.8 in order to be able to download vs 4.4.3 --- rather than going with older 3.8.22 (compatible with OS X 10.7.5) Lion) now and upgrading at later time to Yosemite. I am aware that for older versions I would be using dropbox to sync.

Versions 4.4.3 VS 3.8.22:

  • Differences in stability?
  • Is migration process significantly smoother? Ease and potential loss of data (especially from older version)?
  • --- for vs 3.8.22 do you upgrade to 4 then to 5?
  • --- Is there cost upgrade twice

Trying to think some steps ahead here, on time, effort and cost that will be spent for each upgrade (both Password1 as well as my OSX systems), as well as ramifications of each of these. Any help of big picture and streamlining the process is appreciated!

Thanks
Cypress

    Hi @cypressdubin,

One aspect of 1Password 4 that I prefer over 1Password 3 is the use of an .sqlite database file for the local vault and the relegation of the .agilekeychain to that of the sync format. If for any reason anything goes wrong in Dropbox (not saying it will) but it gives you the option of blowing away the troublesome sync file without harming your own data. 1Password 4 also allows for secondary vaults which you may find appealing. Now whether these are selling points for you is something only you can answer.

    As for your questions though.

I don't know if I'd say there is any massive difference in stability between 1Password 4 and 1Password 3. Both work and we even have some people still running 1Password 3 in Yosemite.

I find the migration process pretty smooth and that is regardless if you start with v3 and jump to v5 or perform it in steps of going from v3 to v4 to v5. The big leap is from 1Password 3 to either of the other versions but what happens is if they don't find a vault where they expect to see it they do check the 1Password 3 folder and it will check Dropbox. If it finds the .agilekeychain in the 1Password 3 folder it will import automatically and you do nothing. If it find the .agilekeychain in Dropbox it will not only import but also configure Dropbox syncing at the same time.

As for upgrade costs. Well you'll definitely be purchasing from our web store given your requirements but you'll actually be purchasing a 1Password 5 licence. That licence though will allow you to run whatever version between 3-5 that you wish. When you've updated OS X to a newer version, well you're still licensed for anything between 3-5 so no extra cost.

It's pretty much up to you. I can understand a reluctance to upgrade an OS for a single program although I do think 1Password 4 has advantages over 1Password 3, even if it's only that it was under active development up until the release of Yosemite. That means it uses the current extensions that we know work on the major browsers while those extensions for 1Password 3 I believe still work but as time goes on... Of course if you're running Lion you might be limited in what version of the browsers work anyway?

Hopefully that helps but if you do have any further questions do please ask.
