Replace primary vault

Want to start over with a new primary vault. Main purpose is to change master password, and use that new master password for the encryption.

Have tried to follow multiple procedures in discussions for this, but they have not workedl. 1Password still brings up my old primary vault.

I have exported the data from the primary vault, and have it in a safe place.

So, with 1Password 5.3 on a Mac, how do I get it to start over and build a new primary vault?

    In essence:

    1. export all your 1P data as a *.1pif file;
    2. disable any sync of 1P data that you use;
    3. follow this knowledge base article to start over;
    4. import the *.1pif file;
    5. securely delete the *.1pif file (which is unencrypted).

    Did not work.

    Went through the procedure twice (besides my earlier attempts).

    Trying to make sure I do everything correctly. Note the following:

    The knowledge base article shows "1Password 5" in the menu bar. That is not what shows for my version (just "1Password"), and About 1Password shows: Version 5.3 (530029).

    What are you using to sync?

    Hi @collard,

    Thanks for that extra information. It sounds like you're using the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store (that would be why your menu says 1Password instead of 1Password 5).

    So when you're reading that Starting Over guide, do you notice that the section called "Step 2: Locate and move the existing data folder" contains two different sets of instructions? It says "The following instructions differ depending on whether your purchased 1Password from the Mac App Store or from our online store."

    You should go ahead and follow the steps under "If you use the Mac App Store version of 1Password," and skip over the section below "If you use the version of 1Password from the AgileBits store."

    If that still doesn't work for you, please let us know what steps you are able to take and where you get stuck, including any error messages that you may see, and we'll see what we can do from there. Thanks!

    1. I was using iCloud sync. I turned it off before I started this process.
    2. I was using the instructions for the Mac App Store version of 1Password. All 5 times I followed it.
    3. I never received and error message. Not sure how I would, since the "Starting Over" instructions have you quitting the application and performing Finder/file operations in OS X

    Actually, just noticed: "If you did not have existing 1Password data from another version, you’ll be prompted to create a new vault; otherwise, 1Password will find your data and prompt you for your Master Password."

    So the procedure I was given does not do what I need it to do.

    *Want to start over with a new primary vault."

    Please let me know how I do that, as I originally asked.

    If you follow exactly the starting over procedure I linked to, including @vee's suggestions, 1P should most definitely not offer to open an existing vault when you start over—unless you have some other relic of 1P on your machine. I'm wondering if you ever ran 1P3 on that machine and, if so, whether that might not have been fully un-installed. Is that a possibility? In any event, see if this AgileBits' post and the one following it helps.

    I followed it to the T. Did not change a thing. Still comes up.

    At this point, I am uninstalling all 1Password, finding and deleting anything agilebits or 1Password. This is kind of scary, because I am not sure what to do about some of the caches.

    Very disappointed by this. If there was an option to replace the primary vault, then this would not be necessary.

    Also, please cleanup/clarify your knowledgeable instructions. They obviously are not complete.

    Cleaned my system of all 1Password and agilebit files. Rebooted. Reinstalled (Mac App Store version).

    Did notice the following files, which appear to be restored after I delete them:

    • ./Caches/CloudKit/2BUA8C4S2C.2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
    • ./Caches/CloudKit/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword
    • ./Caches/CloudKit/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-ios
    • ./Caches/CloudKit/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
    • ./Caches/CloudKit/iCloud.com.agilebits.onepassword-ios

    Not sure what to do. When I stopped syncing my Primary vault, I did tell it to delete it from iCloud.

    So now a total of 3+ hours spent on this.

    Confirmed, does not work.

    These files keep getting restored.

    I have iCloud Drive completely off, not just for this app.

    Hi @collard,

    I'm sorry to hear about all the difficulty this is causing. When you relaunch 1Password after following the Starting Over steps, are you selecting "I'm new to 1Password" or "I've used 1Password before"?

    If you're selecting "I'm new to 1Password" and those steps still aren't working, then something else must be interfering. I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac so we can take a closer look to find the source of the issue. Here's how:
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#mac4

    Then please attach the entire file to an email to us at support+forums@agilebits.com

    Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

    You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can quickly track down the Report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :)

    Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    I was not seeing the "I'm new to 1Password" or anything of the sort. Was presented with my old vault, and it is asking me to enter my master password.

    I did run the diagnostics report (and emailed it). Looking at it, I noticed another 1Password 4 directory.

    So this time I went on a more thorough cleaning. And it finally did show me "I'm new to 1Password".

    I was able to create a new vault, and import my data.

    Now getting it synced to other machines.

    Thanks for you help.

    Hi @collard,

    I apologise for the bumpy ride but it's great to hear you've managed to reach your goal. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here but if you have any further questions or issues please do post!

    Hi @collard,

    I did run the diagnostics report (and emailed it). Looking at it, I noticed another 1Password 4 directory. So this time I went on a more thorough cleaning.

    Without knowing exactly what you did, I want to mention here, just in case, that using any app cleaning utilities can sometimes cause unintended damage to 1Password data, and that 1Password 5 does make use of some folders named "1Password 4."

    I also noticed in your diagnostics report that you have five separate .agilekeychain files stored in different locations on your computer, so if you're not using any of those, you may want to delete them to avoid confusion in the future.

    But I am very glad to hear you were able to get it all up and running, one way or another! And sorry for the frustration it took to get there. Thanks for using 1Password! :)
