Unable to Sync between iPhone/Ipad with iMac

I have just reinstalled my OS on my iMac and have lost the original data file. However I managed to retrieve and old copy(181 items) and used it on the iMac. However it cannot sync with my iPhone/ipad(188 items) which has the latest data.

Please advice on syncing to make sure that the iMac has the remaining 7 items. My copy of 1 password was bought from Agilebits but the 2 copies of IOS was from Apple app store. I would like to sync via dropbox, iCloud and direct wifi if possible. I also would like to have a physical backup of the data should i reinstall 1Passors 5 again.

Thanks

Not iCloud, as restrictions by Apple mean that products bought outside the App Store (such as your version of 1PW for Mac) can't use it. But Dropbox and wi-fi sync will work.

As for physical copies, do you backup to an external drive? Either Time Machine, or a cloning program such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. It is a good idea to have one or the other, preferably both.

    Hi @mjude,

My preference would be to wipe the old vault you found from your iMac and to populate a fresh copy of 1Password using one of your iOS devices as the seed. While it is saying there are only 7 new items you may have made a lot of other changes to the existing 181 items and while merging the vaults may work out okay I would feel safer going down the other route unless you have a reason for using the 181 item vault you found.

If both of your iOS devices are showing the same 188 items then you must have been syncing prior to the reinstallation of OS X. If you were syncing by Dropbox then that sync data will still be present and we can use it.

Here's our guide for How do I start over with an empty vault? on the Mac. If you follow that you will be starting with a fresh copy of 1Password and if there is Dropbox sync data in either ~/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain or ~/Dropbox/apps/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain then 1Password will want to use it - no user intervention required.

If you need to set up Dropbox syncing on your iOS device first then our Sync with Dropbox will help guide you.

If you were using Wi-Fi Sync before my personal preference would be to create a backup of your iOS vault and use that to start 1Password on your Mac. You know how to use a backup so all we need to cover is how to create a backup on your iOS device and how to get that from your iOS device to your Mac. That is all covered on our Creating and restoring 1Password backups in iTunes (iOS). You can restore a backup from either the Mac or iOS device on any copy of Mac or iOS as they use the exact same backup format.

Once you've done that you can safely set up Wi-Fi Sync again using our Sync over Wi-Fi guide.

If you have any questions relating to any of that please do ask.
