Upgrading to 1P5 from 1P3.8 rather than purchasing?

Last night I purchased 1Password 5 but didn't download it because I realized I have 3.8.21 and was thinking I could just upgrade instead? I need to install it on 2 devices. Can I just upgrade to 1P5 rather than purchase it? My husband needs it for his laptop and iPhone, so does he have to purchase it from his own devices or can he use the new 1P5 I just purchased? Thanks!

The upgrade from 1P3 to 1P5 is not free: you have to pay for it. What you have to pay depends on where you buy it. You can buy 1P for Mac either from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits store and in order to answer your questions properly we need to know from which place you bought 1P5.

1. If you ever want to use iCloud to sync 1P data between your Mac and an iOS device you have to use 1P from the Mac App Store because the version from the AgileBits store doesn't support iCloud sync (following changes made by Apple on the launch of OS X Yosemite). Both versions support sync of 1P data by either local wifi or Dropbox.
2. If you buy from the AgileBits store you get an upgrade discount because you owned 1P3. That discount isnt't be available if you buy from the Mac App Store.

My husband needs it for his laptop and iPhone, so does he have to purchase it from his own devices or can he use the new 1P5 I just purchased?

If you bought from the AgileBits store the licence position is explained in this knowledge base article (it's valid for up to six members of the same household.) If you bought from the Mac App Store your husband can download his copy without charge from the Mac App Store only if he uses the same Apple ID as you or you have a family sharing arrangement under OS X Yosemite.

1P for Mac and 1P for iOS are completely separate products. In other words, if you need 1P for iOS you have to get that separately from the App Store accessed on your iOS device. It's a free app with an in-app purchase to enable pro features. The in-app purchase can't be shared between you and your husband so if you both need the pro features you'd both have to pay for them.

Thanks so much for your detailed response — very helpful! My next question is, can I "return" or "exchange" the new 1P5 that I purchased from Agilebits (but didn't download) and get the upgrade instead?

You can obtain a refund from AgileBits to enable you to buy the Mac App Store version if you bought the AgileBits store version within the past 30 days (as you clearly did). Probably someone from AgileBits will spot your post and trigger a refund but if you want to do something about it before then send an email to support+licenses @ agilebits.com with the following information:

1. your full name;
2. your full address when you purchased 1P;
3. the date you bought 1P;
4. a request for a refund to enable you to buy the Mac App Store version of 1P;
5. a link to this thread.

You will receive an automatic response with a ticket number. Post that number in this thread, which will help AgileBits connect the two and speed the response.
