Problems migrating from 3.8 to 5.3

Help, I've bought a new mac and trying to migrate from 3.8 to 5.3 . Here's what I've done
1. I've sucessfully been syncing my 3.8 database to dropbox
2. I installed 5.3 on a new machine and configured the default vault to sync to DB. It seems to work but there none of my items show up in the UI
3. Using the 3.8 instance I tried Tools > Export All > 1Password interchange file but the export fails. Some files are written and I can successfully load it into 5.3 but the records are incomplete
4. I also tried to export as "Text File" the export is successful but 5.3 does not have an import option for text file format
5. From 5.3 I tried double clicking on the vault from drop box. This creates a new vault but it is empty

Thoughts?

When opening 1P 5.3 for the first time you should be able to click on Awesome, let's get started on the Welcome tour, then click on I've used 1Password before and select your data file from the Dropbox folder to pick up the old data. Does that not work for you?

    Hi @bgoldin,

That's very odd. Can I ask, if you view your .agilekeychain using 1PasswordAnywhere (you do so via Dropbox's website - it's all covered in the guide), does it show the vault you would expect to see or does it show you the vault you're seeing in 1Password 5.3?

Stephen_C, I skipped the getting started wizard and i'm not sure how to find it agin. Probably shouldn't have jumped ahead.

    littlebobbytables,

Thanks for pointing me to 1PasswordAnywhere. Using the tool shows that I have no items yet the fault should have 370. see below.

    Here's what's happening:
    1. In chrome I get an error trying to open 1passwordanywhere saying that it cannot open "encryptionkeys.js"
    2. I tried in safari and it works fine...
    3. Once the page loads it says that I have zero items (see screenshot)
    4. Yet the backup file says that i have 370 (see screen shot)
    5. Also opening the file shows 370 many records in the .\data\default folder

Should I try to find a windows computer to use the repair tools?

Looking on my original computer, running 3.8. Where are the passwords stored? is this different than the sync to dropbox location?

    Hi @bgoldin,

I'm sorry you're running into problems trying to get your data into 1Password 5 for Mac!

In your screenshot, it looks like you're trying to access 1PasswordAnywhere directly from the 1Password.agilekeychain stored locally on your Mac. That often doesn't work correctly due to local file restrictions in web browsers. Instead, please open your web browser, then go to dropbox.com and sign into your Dropbox account. On that website, open the 1Password.html file from inside 1Password.agilekeychain. Does that show your data correctly, or does it still show zero items?

If it still shows zero items, it sounds like something is wrong with that keychain, which is very strange because 1Password 3 for Mac reads your data directly from the .agilekeychain bundle (i.e. the data in Dropbox is the data file being read by 1Password 3 - this works differently than in 1Password 4 or 5).

It looks like you found backup files for your 1Password data, so one thing you can try is to copy a backup file to your new Mac and use that to restore your data in 1Password 5 by following these steps:

    • Copy the backup file to your new Mac
    • On the new Mac, rename the backup file to: 1Password.agilekeychain.zip
    • Double-click that file to unzip it, and it will now be named 1Password.agilekeychain
    • Open 1Password 5 and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences
    • Select the Sync tab, then choose Folder from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu (if it asks you to disable Dropbox sync first, make sure you do not choose the option to delete the data from Dropbox)
    • Click the Choose button, then select the 1Password.agilekeychain file you created from the backup in the above steps (then click Open)
    • Click Merge with Existing to start syncing

Does that help? Let us know how it goes and if you run into problems trying to do that. Thanks!

@Drew_AG With your help I think I have a solution

First, I tried viewing 1Password.agilekeychain via dropbox but it still showed that I had zero items.

Second, I followed your steps for taking the backup, unzipping it and then importing it.

Thanks again for the clear instructions.
