Sync 2nd vault using wifi

Hello!

I want to sync my 2nd vault by using wifi (iPhone <-> Mac) but can only see "Dropbox" which I do not want. Is there a way to sync both vaults via wifi? I used this a few weeks/month ago but now it seems it isn't working anymore. At the moment I just have both vaults on my iPhone but not on my Mac.

Many thanks in advance!
Thomas

    Hi @suitedtom,

    Thanks for asking this question.

Unfortunately we only support wifi sync for the first vault (Primary vault) in 1Password. I believe this is the case since we introduced the feature, so maybe you had wifi on your first vault and not the second.

    Sorry about that.

Many thanks for you quick answer. I'm pretty sure this was working before. However, do you think this can be enabled (again)? I can't imagine this is a big deal from technical site. Thanks.

    Hi,

maybe I misunderstood you, @nathanvf , but I'm using WiFi sync between my Mac and two iOS devices with a primary and two secondary vaults for months. I only had to enable WiFi sync on the Mac-side for all vaults (as far as I remember). This is still the case for the most current version. Just checked that on iOS I still see all three vaults under sync.

@suitedtom: I think there may be some misunderstanding here. Perhaps I can clear things up. Dropbox and Wi-Fi Sync are not mutually exclusive. You can use both, for different vaults in some cases if you wish.

The Sync tab in Preferences is devoted to iCloud/Dropbox/Folder Sync setup. These are mutually exclusive. However, Wi-Fi Server is a separate tab entirely, and you can configure it to sync secondary vaults (optional) along with the primary (required). I believe this is what Nathan was referring to, and I'm sorry if that caused any confusion. I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions! :)

many thanks for clarifying this! Unfortunately I already moved all my items from the old 2nd vault into my primary vault and delted the 2nd old vault. Now I was able to create a new 2nd vault and I was able to sync via wifi. I have no idea why I wasn't able before. However, now it is working again! Many thanks!

One last question. As I wrote above, everything working fine now between Mac on iPhone (created a new 2nd vault with separate master password).
Now I tried to sync this new 2nd vault with my Windows machine but unfortunately I couldn't manage this. If I go to "Sync" on my iPhone and "Set Up Syncing" I can only choose "Sync with Dropbox" and no possibility to sync via wifi. On Windows I created a new vault with same master password (for 2nd vault) but no idea how I can sync via wifi now? Can you help? Or can you provide a guide or something like this? Thanks!

    @suitedtom: You're welcome! :)

1Password for Mac can only Wi-Fi Sync secondary vaults along with the primary vault; and because 1Password for Windows does not have secondary (or primary) vaults (it works with only one at a time), it will simply sync the vault you have open via Wi-Fi Sync.

Since I'm not clear on exactly what you're trying to do, I can't really be more specific. But if you'll tell me a bit about your setup and what you'd like to accomplish, I'll see what advice I can offer. :chuffed:

Many thanks again! I really appreciate your support! I'm sorry but I still didn't understand how to manage this. What do you mean with "it works with only one at a time"? On my iPhone I can see both vaults after entering Primary master password. I can switch between both vaults. I just want to bring the 2nd vault to my Windows machine.

    What I did:

    1. I have created a 2nd vault on Mac for testing which is called "Test".
    2. I was able to snyc via wifi to my iPhone and now I can see both vaults (primary and test) on it.
    3. But for "Test" vault (2nd vault) it says "Set Up Syncing" and I can only choose "Sync with Dropbox" and not wifi.

As far as I understood to sync changes which I have done on "Test" vault I only have to sync my "Primary" vault which is working fine on my Mac. But how can I bring the "Test" vault (2nd vault) on my Windows machine? Or isn't this working at all?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi @suitedtom,

Syncing over Wi-Fi is designed to work with one computer and one or more mobile devices. Adding an additional computer to a Wi-Fi sync solution isn't recommended in any way, shape, or form. We've had a few brave adventurers venture into the land of multi-computer Wi-Fi sync using their iOS device as a mule, and the way was fraught with sync conflicts and peril.

May I ask why Dropbox isn't a solution for you? We also have 1Password for Teams which might be a solution for you when we roll out support for it on Windows in the near future.

    Hi Aleen!

Many thanks for your answer! It would have been more comfortable to using both machines but it is OK for me using my Mac only. The reason behind of I don't want to use Dropbox is, because I want to store all passwords only locally and not on any cloud based solution. I think a lot of users feeling better do not use an online solution to saving their passwords.

Many thanks again for your quick and great support!

    Cheers!

I totally get where you're coming from @suitedtom! I use Dropbox sync for some of my vaults and 1Password for Teams on others, but I know others prefer to make sure everything happens locally :)

Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions!

@suitedtom: I'm sorry for not being clearer that Wi-Fi Sync works between a single computer and one or more mobile devices (you're essentially pairing your phone with the computer).

I did also want to clear one other thing up if I could: your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so 1Password simply doesn't depend on the sync service to protect your data. 1Password is secure by design, not by chance.

So whether you sync using Wi-Fi, Dropbox, iCloud, or not at all, 1Password has your back — and so do we. Cheers! :)
