Duplicates when importing from .1pif files
With version 6.1 (or with the latest incarnation of El Capitan) the .1pif import feature seems to be causing duplicates?!
I have exported "all objects" to a .1pif file and then immediately re-imported the .1pif file. And now I am left with twice as many entries in my 1Password vault. I am only using one (primary) vault. PS: I first noticed this when syncing two vaults on two machines using a USB stick, but I now discovered the same effect when exporting and immediately re-importing on the same machine.
1Password Version: 6.1
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: OSX 10.11.3
Sync Type: .1pif

Hi @cooperate ,
Thanks for taking the time to write in with your concern.
When you import from a 1pif file, it will make a copy. This behaviour was changed a few versions ago to prevent overwriting of data, and to fix some issues related to importing with multiple vaults. If you were using 1pif files as a way to sync data between machines, it's better to use Folder Sync. In the Preferences, choose Sync and set each vault to "Folder Sync" and choose the sync location to be your USB stick. You may find that works better than exporting and importing 1pif files.
Folder Sync also has the advantage of the data remaining encrypted. 1pif files are not encrypted, so if you were to lose your USB stick and someone found it, they could import your data. With Folder Sync, they would need to know your vault password.
If there is a use case that I am missing, please reply and we'll see what we can do to help you out.
Cheers,

Thanks Kevin.
The first folder sync resulted in duplicate entries on the second Mac, too. Rather unfortunate. I assume that this was because both instances of 1Password had "forgotten" that they were supposed to be in sync in the meantime and that 1Password switched to some sort of standard behavior by "merging" the two vaults.
So far, all subsequent folder syncs have gone smoothly. :)

Hi @cooperate,
Things should be smooth for you going forward if you stick to Folder Sync. If you want the nitty gritty rules for when we create new identifiers for items as opposed to preserving them, let me know and I can provide them... but it tends to bore people.
Cheers.
Rick
