Multiple computers
Hi guys,
Quick questions. I purchased 1password way back; windows and mac type license (running the latest ATM). About to rebuild my Girlfriends macbook.
- Can I install a copy of 1 password on her Mac with my license?
- If so can she run her own vault and not link it with mine?
- If not presume will need buy a separate version?
Cheers for the help and wonderful software,
Thanks

She can certainly run her own vault not linked with yours.
The licencing model has changed very recently, but if you bought a licence for 1PW4 to 6 (they are the same licence) then it is valid for other members of your household (I feel sure that AgileBits neither can nor would want to change the terms on already purchased licence, but I am not an AgileBits staff member). Of course, "girlfriend" may or may not be in the same household as you; if not, you would not be entitled to install 1PW on her Mac.

I am probably being stupid but I have an iMac, Macbook and iPad which I use for various work related tasks. What is the easiest way to have all 3 synch seemlessly. I have only the 1 vault but each f the 3 seem to have different amounts of data in them as I have added passwords from each of the machines

Hi @matt_montgomery,
Without trying to come across as being an officious ass, I do feel the licence doesn't extend to girlfriends, even those you may be living with under the same roof. The old style licence stated that you could share a licence with up to five other family members in the same household. Sorry about that
It does kind of feel like a new licence will be needed for her Mac as a result and to answer your second question, whether a new licence was required or not, you can definitely keep separate vaults. In fact you could even keep separate vaults on your own devices even though you're using the same licence on multiple machines, the licence is to run the software while how you want to set up your vaults is entirely up to you.
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi @steve_husk,
You have three options available to you.
1Password Families. You would create a family account and connect each device to it. You could then move the items from their primary vault into the personal vault that exists in the Family account. Our server becomes your vault and any changes made on any device are sent back to the server. There are a few nice things about this, of which is removing some of the trials that can happen with syncing. This is a subscription service. You can learn more at 1Password Families to see if this is something that interests you.
If you purchased 1Password a while ago and don't want a subscription service for whatever reason then all copies of 1Password can use either iCloud or Dropbox to sync. The best way to start is to set up syncing on either your iMac or MacBook first and then have the others connect to the same location. They will each download the items from the other copies and merge their ones in. I would recommend starting at Syncing your 1Password data (Mac) and then Syncing (iOS).
If you created an item on more than one copy of 1Password they will have different Universally Unique IDs (UUIDs) which means you will have duplicate items. These will have to be taken care of manually and this will happen regardless of which way you decide to sync.
You may very well have questions so please do ask. It's much better that you feel happy with what you'd like to do before you start then start and reach a point where you feel unsure

Thanks for the intersting reply. My subsequent rebuttal may prove to be convoluted, of which I apologise in advance. I'm trying to figure out if your comment is an attempt at humour or a serious statement. At first I took it in jest, however if you indeed are being serious, please define family. I take it then that technically a wife or partner is therefore excluded from the "family" policy given they are not of blood relation. Does this then also mean my long lost fifth cousin can be included under the policy? In this country if one is in a relationship for over 12 months the couple is designated as defacto in the eyes of the law. Perhaps it's a case of semantics. If partners are allowed under the policy, she would qualify. If the policy only relates to a relationship wed by the church, doesn't this then exclude same sex couples?
Now I shall descend from the soapbox. Thank you for the information, I wasn't aware the policy had changed. At the time of purchase I believe there was an option for a family pack but choose the mac & windows option.
Regards.

Hi @matt_montgomery,
I apologize for the confusion here! The recent changes to our licensing policy have made things a bit different, but I'm sure we'll be able to find the solution that is right for you.
I certainly don't want to get into a debate about what defines family, as that's a nebulous concept that will be different for every person you ask. I've got a few friends that I consider closer family than some cousins, for example! Honestly, we trust that our users will honour the spirit of the licensing agreement. If your girlfriend is a member of your family, then by all means, use the existing license that you have on her computer.
Now, with respect to your syncing question, did Little Bobby's response help you there, or can we be of further assistance? In addition to the articles that he linked to, I'd like to share one more with you. Depending on how you and your girlfriend share data, you might want to look into Multiple Vaults as a way to share what you need to share, while keeping your personal information private.
If you have any further questions or concerns, we're here to help!
