How do I create a new login on a (Chrome) browser page when not prompted by 1Password?

Regardless of browser on my Mac (I'm using Chrome), if I'm not prompted to save a new login by 1Password, I can't find a way to 'prompt' 1Password to pop up and enroll a new user name and password for a new account I create. Or even if I just want to add a new login into 1Password from scratch, I can not identify where to choose to get this done. I selected the cog to the right of "Search 1Password" and selected "Save New Login" but that was unresponsive. Am I on the right track and it just doesn't work or is there another location I need to select to create a new login?

    Hi there @BLBSr,

    You are very close indeed.

If you select the cog menu, and choose "Open 1Password" a window displaying your items should appear.

From there you can select the File > New Item menu or click the "+" button that is in the lower middle of the window that appears to create a new item. Just fill it with whatever information you wish and click save and you should be good to go!

Nathan, Thank you for that screen shot. That makes sense and I'll start using it. I guess i was spoiled from that 1Password shortcut icon at the top of my Mac screen. I figured there would be a 'new item' choice there.

@BLBSr There is. In the 1Password Mini at the to of the screen, click on the gear icon and you'll see this:

Yeah, I saw that "Save new Login" and every time I select it...nothing happens. So if that is suppose to pop up a new window that allows me to create and save a new log in, it isn't showing up. I checked my pop up blockers too in each browser. Maybe there is a bug in my system preventing it from working. If you have a link to provide instructions to repair, that would be helpful. Thank you

    Hi @BLBSr,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the Save new Login option in 1Password mini!

I don't know the exact steps you're taking, but here's how it should work:

    • Visit the sign-in page on a website.
    • Enter your username and password, but do not submit the form.
    • Click the 1Password extension icon in your browser (or the 1Password mini icon in your Mac's menubar). Enter your Master Password if prompted.
    • Click the gear icon (to the right of the Search field), then select Save new Login from the menu.

If you follow those steps, 1Password should then offer to save a Login item as expected. If not, is it a problem on one specific site? Or on all sites that you've tried?

Drew, I should have thought of that. That makes perfect sense once you laid it out. I was just selecting the "Save new Login" with no sign in page pulled up on my browser. If I want to add something manually, I'll go back to the File > New Login drop down. But now I know that this short cut will allow me to pull up a sign in page and save it. I'll try that out today.

    I'm glad that helped, @BLBSr!

If you want to create a new Login item for a sign-in form on a website, it's almost always better to do that through the 1Password browser extension (i.e. allow 1Password to automatically prompt you to save a Login, or use the steps from my previous response). That allows 1Password to learn details about the form fields on that site, which helps it to fill that form again in the future.

If you manually create a Login item from the main app, it doesn't learn any specific details about the sign-in form on that website, and uses a different logic to try to fill the sign-in form. That often works, but isn't as reliable as if you save a Login via the extension.

If you have more questions about that or need anything else, just let us know - we're always happy to help! :)
