Slowness after upgrading from 1Password version 4 to Version 7 (Possible Reason Why)

So I wanted to share some of my findings with upgrading from standalone 1Password to 1Password for Families subscriptions.

On the Mac side of things it was a pretty awesome experience with being able to scan the QR codes and all that. The Windows side was a little bit trickier because my desire was to only use a local vault here on my work laptop.

Here is what I did after making a backup of my Agilekeychain:

  1. Installed 1P v 7
  2. I converted the old Agilekeychain after installing 1P v7. (it prompted)
  3. It kept crying it was in read-only mode because I had not added a license or logged into the subscription
  4. I logged in the subscription and it asked me if I want to Sync and I said NOT NOW (or NO)
  5. I restarted 1P a couple of times and eventually the Read-Only went away
  6. I went into the settings and asked 1P not to display the Subscription based vaults and only the local one
  7. I set the default save to the local vault
  8. No data ever got populated from the Subscription vaults as best as I can tell (hope that stays that way)
  9. I uninstalled 1P v4

So I was up and working but it was SLOW SLOW SLOW. I spent several hours yesterday trying to resolve that and updated to the latest beta. Nothing seemed to help. I would click on the 1P icon in the browser and it would take 15-90 seconds for the contextual menu to appear. (Same after pressing Control-)

Today I went in and turned off both the Use rich icons and Show image previews for Documents under the Display section of the General settings tab.

BOOM, it looks like the speed issue is resolved now. Hope this helps someone else. (and is a genuine fix for my Windows issues)

1Password Version: 7.2.581 (beta)
Extension Version: 4.7.3.90
OS Version: Windows 7 Professional SP1
Sync Type: None

  • Hi @Carl,

Thanks for reporting this. This is a known issue if you have a lot of items that is still in the middle of being merged into the local database, such as custom icons and/or Rich icons, Watchtower checking each item for you, etc.

If you turn Rich Icons back on, does it still slow down?

Document previews wouldn't be working for standalone vaults, it is only for the 1Password.com vaults. It would be interesting to see if you can reproduce this if turning on Rich Icons didn't reproduce the issue.

@MikeT Turning Rich icons back on turns it back into a turtle. Disable and it turns into a gazelle again.

I re-enabled the document preview feature separately and it first it seemed like it did the same slow down but after testing it again I see it does not have an impact.

So turning on Rich icons consistently will turtle it and disabling fixes it. I'm behind a corporate firewall and possibly a proxy so that may be a factor.

    @Carl: This is quite interesting.

Could you please try to reproduce this issue with Rich Icons and then create a Diagnostics Report from 1Password 7 on your PC?

Attach the Diagnostics Report to an email message addressed to support+windows@agilebits.com and we will take a closer look.

Let us know once you do. Thank you very much in advance! :+1:

    Cheers,
    Greg
