Unable to delete 1password.exe file on Windows 10

Hi - I tried to install to the latest version of 1password - 7.2.581 but got following error message: "filedelete failure: code 32. Reading up the forum, I then decided to uninstall previous version and install the latest. I successfully uninstalled the previous version.

However whilst attempting to install the latest version, I get the following error message: "action cannot be completed as the file is open in system"

I tried deleting/moving the app folder but the same message appears. Any assistance would be appreciated.

1Password Version: 7.2.576
Extension Version: nil
OS Version: Windows 10
Sync Type: 1password

  • Hi @prakles,

    Thanks for writing in.

    Two potential reasons for why this may happen;

    1. The most common; your anti-malware solution is interfering with the process, try whitelisting the 1Password directory (%LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password) to see if it'll help.
    2. You have web browsers opened with 1Password extension running that can open the 1Password process. Try closing all web browesrs before you install 1Password.

It may help to reboot and then install 1Password.

Hi Mike - thanks for the response.

    1) I tried having the folder excluded from the virus protection but when I attempt to move/delete the file or the app folder, it says that the program is in use in System.
    2) I have uninstalled the extension from the webrowser.
    3) Note I am attempting to remove the old version and going for a new clean install.

    Any other suggestions - thanks

Mike - after my last post. I managed to delete the folder by restarting in Safe Mode. I then proceeded to install the latest version which is now working.

  • @prakles: I'm glad to hear you were able to find a solution! Some anti-viruses aren't fond of how our installer handles updates, so we do see these issues from time to time. We're actually working on some changes that should help here I'm pretty excited about. No ETA just yet, but I'm looking forward to it and hope we'll have news to share soon. :chuffed:
