Lost my master password, deleted 1Pass from Mac OS 10.13.6.. Downloaded new. Can't create new login

OS 10.13.6: So I lost my master password (from my recently downloaded free version) & ended up having to uninstall 1Password (as recommended), then download a new free version. But there was no way I could create a new password so I STILL have a 1Password app that I can't get into AS WELL AS having lost all my logins. Will somebody kindly help me sort this out? And uninstalling 1Password was no joke as no matter how many times I logged out of my computer, it still 'read' as 'application in use' so I couldn't delete it. FINALLY after an hour, I got rid of it. I can't even consider buying it until I gain access to my vault - or a new vault - or create a new account. Or WHATEVER will help!

Welcome to the forum, @Nadhia! I'm sorry for the trouble, but I'm not sure I understand exactly what's going on, from just your description. There has never been a "free version" of 1Password. We don't offer any sort of "lite" version like that. Can you tell us what you previously had? Did you create a 1password.com account? Or did you just download 1Password, and if so, what version did you initially install (best guess -- you can also tell us about when you did this).

Thank you so much! A friend who'd been using 1Password for ages helped me & THOUGHT he was downloading a free version rather than a free TRIAL version. So that's one thing clarified. This was at the beginning of October. I moved all my logins from LastPass over & LOVED it. Unfortunately, I'm old and brain-drained so yesterday I somehow lost the master password. I read in support that, in my position (i.e., not having any other viable options), the only thing to do was to delete 1Password & reinstall & start again. So I did. (Btw, I must have an account as I received the Emergency Kit with secret key, which I still have.) But the reinstalled 1Password (latest version) apparently still wants the same pw I lost!. Ergo my trouble. OK. So now I am more than ready to purchase a 1Password account, but I'll need some help first, to absolutely eradicate any memory of the former master password. And don't worry: I've learned my lesson - won't lose the master password again. Will write it in stone somewhere VERY safe!

    Hi Lars,

I just got an email from 'hello@1password.com, reminding me that I have only 4 days left of my free 1-month trial. Perhaps a workaround for my problem would be to let the trial lapse, YOU delete me, then I sign up right away for 1Password for Mac. Thankfully, I still have another month of LastPass so I'm not entirely in the toilet. But I'd much rather switch to 1Password if we can sort this out. All my fault, and very stupid. But such is old age: very stupid. I'd much rather leave the planet at 40!

    Thanks again. Awaiting your response.

@Nadhia - ah, OK -- thanks for the clarification. The reason the re-installed 1Password app still wants your old Master Password is because the data you store in 1Password is not deleted when you delete the app itself. In order to truly "start over," please follow these instructions. That will reset your local data.

Note: only do that if you're 100% certain you cannot remember your Master Password. If you're certain and know you need to start over, go ahead. And please throw away the old Emergency Kit, as it may confuse you if you keep it around (since it will no longer be valid/working). You can then sign up for a new 1password.com account, but not from the same email address (one account per email address). If you need to use the same email address to sign up, let me know and I can send you an email with a special link to fully delete the old account, at which point you can use the same email address.

Whether you use the same email address or a new one to create your new 1Password account, you can still transfer your data over from Last Pass again just as you did previously. This time, make sure you print out or save your Emergency Kit and write your Master Password down on it. You probably shouldn't leave this lying around on your desk...but if it's in a safe place (like a floor safe or wherever you keep important documents like your passport), you'll have it in case you forget again. Hope that's helpful! :)

Thank you sincerely for your reply.

First, I have to tell you that I have already read (many times) the information in the link(s) you sent me. NOTHING WORKS. I may be able to recover my vault from backups, but NOT MY MASTER PASSWORD, so the vault is useless without it. That is truly dead and gone. What I want to know is HOW TO DELETE MY ACCOUNT and start again.

Going further, I have 2 email addresses: the one I used to create my 1Password account earlier, and the one I HAD to use (I get confused when things get complicated) when I signed up for the Forum, which refused to accept the other email address for some reason. Therefore, before I get started following whatever steps to "truly 'start over'" (and they are not covered in the link(s) you sent), WHICH email address should I use? When I wanted to sign up for the Forum, the system refused my 1Password account email (nadhialama@gmail.com) - god knows why - so I used my other one - the one you're writing to now. Maybe it's less complicated (I go all to bits with 'complicated') if you tell me WHETHER I can use my Forum email ID to start again OR how to use my existing 1Password ID on the account for which I've lost the master password. To repeat: I need to delete my existing account completely and start again with a nice shiny new paid version.

I can't tell you how encouraged I am to be getting help on this! If you can get back to me ASAP, I'll complete the process today itself. Otherwise, I'll be in radio silence until Nov. 1, as I have to make a quick trip abroad tomorrow for a few days.

    And thanks again!

Right. If you need to use the same email address to sign up, let me know and I can send you an email with a special link to fully delete the old account, at which point you can use the same email address. I'll need you to send an email from the email address you used to sign up for the 1password.com account to support+forum@agilebits.com

    With your email please include:

    • A link to this thread: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/comment/471084/#Comment_471084
    • Your forum username: @Nadhia

That way I can "connect the dots" when I see your diagnostics in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number.  Please post that number in a reply here in this thread, so I can track down the email and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :) Once I receive that, I'll send you out the deletion request email which will contain a special link to delete your account.

I am deeply sorry for all the confusion my ineptitude has caused. First, I need to tell you that I am nearly blind and use visual and audio aids to navigate the web. They have proved completely inadequate in this 1Password business, and I am so sorry for causing you so much trouble.

A Mac expert who uses 1Password (and recommended it to me in the first place) came to town (I live in a small town in S. India) and had a look at my computer. He found the problem immediately: whereas I THOUGHT I was signing on to a paid version of the STANDALONE 1Password, I had inadvertently signed on (and put my credit card on) the yearly subscription.

The Safari problem is secondary, but still (and frequently) a problem.

First, is there any way in which I can cease the monthly trial (before my credit card is charged) and switch to the standalone version, which costs more anyway? Considering how successfully I managed it before I lost the master password, I feel confident I can use it without difficulty. The online version is out of my league completely!

If this is possible, then obliterating my current account (complete with Safari's inability to recognize my new master password) would be most desirable. And downloading the standalone version would be a joy! I'll even have my friend do it for me if you can give me instructions.

Once again, let me apologize for all the confusion I have caused. I hope we can get this organized quickly as my Mac specialist is leaving at the end of the week, and then I'm on my own again - which will be dicey for all of us.

@Nadhia - please don't feel like you're causing us trouble; we're here to help. We can definitely help clear up any account issues you have, but I think at this point it would be better to take this to email rather than continue on discussing private details of your 1Password setup on this public forum. I've sent you a quick email to the address you used to register for this forum. If you don't receive it, please check your Spam or Bulk email folder, as sometimes overzealous spam filters can mark unsolicited email from us as junk.

Have done as you requested. In the meantime I've discovered that I HAD 2 1Password accounts, both under nadhialama. One has apparently been deleted, and the other one remains active.

Is there a reason I haven't heard from you? I am trying to establish a standalone 1Password vault and was counting on you to help me find out WHERE to install it. Or do I have to revert to 1Password 6?

@Nadhia - there is indeed. A few, actually. :) One of them is that it's difficult to coordinate multiple responses to multiple threads/emails on the same topic over multiple points of contact and among multiple teammates -- when we have to do that, it causes confusion and increases the support time for everyone, including you. Let's keep this conversation going in one of the email threads you've sent us instead. Thanks! :)
