Here's why I went back to 1Password 7
I tried 1Password 8 for a while and overall really like it, especially Universal Autofill, but I had to go back to 1Password 7 unfortunately. If any when I see these things have been improved, I'll be happy to revisit.
- Quick Access is just a search bar. No access to Favorites, etc. That's not very quick access to my important stuff.
- I use 1Password Mini to fill in personal info and credit card info in web forms. Not possible via Quick Access. I think the Safari toolbar icon shows basically a Mini window like before, but I remove all those third party toolbar icons because I hate the forced blue for them. That's on Apple.
- When filling logins in a browser, the login options that come up are not properly displayed. Like one at work were I have other logins under the same domain name, but only one that's an exact match for the subdomain, with 1Password 7, it simply filled in the login via ⌘\, but in 1Password 8, it pulls up a menu with everything under that domain name, and the exact subdomain match isn't even the first (default) option.

@coffeemacsunset : just go back to v7. But, you still have subscription to deal with. On the other hand, I've had subscription and family plan for some time--and I like it. YMMV.
If you want what looks like 1P but with vault locations you control--that in fact, you MUST control, as it has no cloud mechanism of its own--then look at Enpass.
I like the cloud and the family sharing features. I will look at Dashlane.
Regardless, it's clear that 1P v8 is a dumpster fire on a wrecking train. Way, way too many of us have been completely turned off from it within the first 15 minutes of using it. That can't be a coincidence. I don't think that something's wrong with me for not liking it, and I won't try to "fix" something that isn't wrong and try to keep using it.
And it's guaranteed that v7 will go away, no doubt sooner rather than later--especially on Mac, where every day and every OS update is a new security setup and AB will tell you, move along with the security train and stay up to date on 1P or get off the train completely, they can't help you.
If 1P v8 is the only choice, then get off the train it shall be.
And they may make all sorts of "promises" about "fixing" things--but it's clear, either (a) they completely missed out on what's important in 1P (incompetence), or (b) they simply didn't care and went and made something random that met goals other than satisfying the paying subscription customers.
Until the past couple of days I didn't know what Electron was. Many here seem to geek out on stuff like that. I now know what it is, but I still don't care. Whatever choices AB made to make v8, they were wrong choices--be in the Electron platform or specific coding and UI choices, all of which were no doubt driven by COST considerations that were shortsighted and with no consideration to "what will this mean to our paying user base and their subscriptions".
All we have in our arsenal is to vote with our wallets. Life is too short. Remember when 1P was a great product, and move on. Nothing lasts forever, and we weren't entitled for that to happen anyway.

@coffeemacsunset If 1Password 8 is proving so problematic to so-called power-users then how on earth are we supposed to continue to recommend and support the product for less tech-savvy friends and relatives. I too have elderly parents with whom I work to secure their online activity and they would not know where to start with the issues thrown up by 1Password 8. I feel that if Agilebits forcibly retire 1Password 7 in an effort to push version 8 then they are going to drive customers away — the competition should be viewing this with interest.

I keep trying 1password 8 but still may 14, 2022 now and keep having issues. Mostly with 'open and fill'. Or the separate 1password in safari app I need to install from the App Store is terrible. Never unlocks when I unlock the main 1password app. I'm so depressed by this since I too have been using 1password for as long as I can remember. At least from 2010 or 2011. It always worked but since 1password 8 its been nothing but problems. It has me wondering what to do now since I even signed up for a paid account last year. 1password 7 still works perfectly. The extension in safari works perfectly.
I have my elderly mother using 1password 7 and its ok but I still can't dream up upgrading her since the open and fill thing is so broken and she will be so lost to know what to do. So this is a huge problem for me. I know people say you can open and fill from the quick search thing in the menu bar but it works maybe 5% of the time. Usually it will open the page but not fill. This is such a huge problem for my mom now and me trying to get her to use 1password and keep safe.
Even in the main 1password 8 Mac app I would sort by most frequently used and now that is gone. Just so sad when so much has changed but in a negative way for me. I don't mean any anger toward the people at 1password. I don't know how long they plan to support 1password7 but I have to go back to using that and don't know when 1password8 will ever fix these things that are broken or if its not even a matter of fixing but just how it will be from now on?
I kind of regret getting a paid account now also since I miss being in control of my archive and where I could store it like on my Mac. Ever since I got a account or subscription seems like I have a lot of regrets by how things have changed. Sadly it has me wondering if I need to change to a different app now. I don't want to but I just wish it worked. I only use Safari yet its such a pain to use now with 1password compared to how well it still works with 1password 7.

dteare Thanks so much for the thoughtful response, Dave. I've been using 1Password since v2 and it's a very important utility for me.
1: We simplified Quick Access a ton and you're right, we removed everything so search and could shine. It sounds like that went too far for you so I'd recommend trying to use the main app instead.
Yeah, Quick Access really went way too far for me. Using the main app instead isn't a workable solution since it isn't usable for filling in in the browser, just like Quick Access.
As for the here and now, the inline menu will highlight the items that can be filled, including addresses and credit cards. Is this not working for you?
If you're talking about from Quick Access, all that happens when I hit Enter on a credit card is it opens in its own little window. If you're talking about the toolbar button, as I've said, I've removed it because I find the forced blue/color for third party app icons horribly distracting.
As for #3, I'm glad that this is something that will be worked on. I consider the current functionality broken.
Overall, as I've said, I like 1Password 8, but I don't think it's ready for primetime in its current state, at least maybe for "power" users. I hope a lot of this gets addressed. For now I'll have to stay on 1Password 7. Is there a feed (RSS?) somewhere for 1Password 8 release notes and updates so I can keep track?

1Password Team
Thanks for sharing your feedback, everyone. And thank you for giving 1Password 8 a try. I'm glad the team made it so easy to switch back and forth between 7 & 8 as it enables y'all to keep using the previously best version of 1Password for Mac and it allows me and others on the team to switch back when we need to verify things.
To address hazmat's specific points:
1: We simplified Quick Access a ton and you're right, we removed everything so search and could shine. It sounds like that went too far for you so I'd recommend trying to use the main app instead. In 1Password 8 we made the menu bar icon configurable so you can have it open the main app with a single click. And along with the ability to hide the sidebar in the main app, you can make it look and work a lot like 1Password mini used to.
2: You're right, the 1Password popup in Safari has the ability to fill identities and credit cards. Hiding the toolbar icon is indeed challenging as there is not api available at the moment to allow us to open the popup any other way. This is something Apple has signalled they will be adding in a future version of their Web Extensions API, so hopefully we'll have some more flexibility there in the future. As for the here and now, the inline menu will highlight the items that can be filled, including addresses and credit cards. Is this not working for you?
3: Subdomain matching is something we'd like to explore and provide more options for. 1P_Mitch said the following on our recent AMA:
It didn’t make launch day, but we really want this too. I have so many test servers on the same domain so I feel the pain. I’m looking to make room for it on our roadmap this summer, there’s just so much going on but thank you for pushing here.
I love how Mitch ended his comment there. Thank you all for pushing on what's important to you. Please continue to share specific items where you feel we can improve. We're listening. 🤗
Take care and enjoy your weekend. ✌️

Those reasons above have me going back to v7 as well - after only installing for 10 minutes! Plus, what is it with the extra "1Password for Safari" app? Why would I need two 1PW apps? Deleting v8 and reinstalling v7 now. Forced upgrade with all these issues would not be good for Agile Bits! I really hope they are listening (reading) the forums and considering their user's feedback...

agreed with all here, especially nainkami.
I, too, tried v8 for a brief time before realizing how good v7 really is, and how I'm not going to tolerate what v8 is.
Frankly, it's time to move on from AB before v7 dies off completely. Moving to v8 is not an option for me, or for many people. Moving to a different product is what's next.

I also agree. Using 1P8 causes frustration and there are various bugs here and there.

+1 on alternative solutions. its not tenable for business. not sure who the target was for v8 but long term pro user were certainly excluded from consideration

I moved to version 8 yesterday, it was bad enough having to suck it up and finally be forced to move to their subscription plan for my personal information, but the changes to the login model are the cherry on the top. No master password and now I must login to each vault is a deal-breaker (and I'm not using a single password for all the accounts as recommended) I'm rolling back to 7 and I'll be reconsidering what I use at home and within my company.
It reminds me of what happened with Fantastical.. take a great product, then change it to how the devs think it should work ignoring the user's needs, and end with a heap of crap.
