Should I use both browser extensions or just one?
I recently signed up for the 30 day trial, but I'm planning on subscribing.
Hope you can clear up some confusion.
What browser extensions do I want on my Mac?
I use Firefox and Chrome. (mostly Firefox)
Do I want the regular 1Password extension for the browsers AND 1Password X ?
Do these conflict?
Do I want one or both?
I have both of these extensions installed on Chrome.
But just 1Password X on Firefox.
This Forum link seems to indicate it's best to just have one:
https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/104213/what-should-i-have-installed-on-my-mac
Sometimes it seems that when I sign in using my Master PW within the toolbar icon's window, I will get another window where I have to sign in again with my Master PW.
Thanks!
I can't find my exact 1Password version, but I started my trial sub on June 11th.
I know it's version 7.
1Password Version: 7
Extension Version: 1.15.3, 4.7.4.90
OS Version: OS X 10.14.5
Sync Type: Not Provided

P.S.
It seems like only the 1Password X is active in my Chrome browser.0 -
Hi @gmj! Welcome to the forum!
What browser extensions do I want on my Mac?
Which one you use comes down to personal preference. If you have a 1Password Membership, you can use both, so you can choose the one you like the most :)
Do I want the regular 1Password extension for the browsers AND 1Password X ?
Do these conflict?
Do I want one or both? While there is nothing stopping you from installing both in the same browser, we recommend choosing one and sticking with it, or you would have two different things to get used to.
So far, which one do you like the most?

Thank you. I'll just stick with 1Password X, as it's the one that I've been using.
Glad to know there's no reason to keep both.0 -
Sounds like a plan. :) If there is anything else we can do, please don't hesitate to contact us.

I was having some issues, so I disabled 1PW X and tried to get the regular 1PW extension in both Chrome and Firefox.
I disabled 1PW X in Chrome and removed it in Firefox.
I installed 1PW on both browsers.
Do I need to remove 1PW X in Chrome? Is that causing problems? The small, black icon (indicating the 1PW extension) is now showing to the right of my address bar on both browsers, but neither of them are active.
I click it and nothing at all happens.I would very much like to try this extension.
Can you help me figure out how to get it active again?
Thanks!0 -
Update:
I got the regular 1PW extension to work on both browsers.I will experiment with it and see how I like it.
I do find it less visually attractive than 1PW X. I don't like the dark panel on the left. But, what I mostly care about is how it works. Hopefully, it will feel more streamlined for logging in.
And will have easily findable actions. Thanks again.

@gmj - you should try disabling 1Password X, since there's no particular reason to have both active at the same time. Make sure the non-X ("desktop app required") extension is enabled, not just installed (sounds like it is, but just to make sure).
If that's not working for you, I'd suggest restarting your Mac, given the changes you've recently made - start everything with a fresh system state, and let us know how/if that works for you.

The non-X has been working now.
1PW X is disabled on both browsers and non-X is enabled.
I restarted my Mac.I think I'm realizing that the annoying problem that made me want to switch from X to the non-X was:
I had to log in with my Master PW twice to access all of 1PW. Once to the extension and once again to the desktop app. (1PW 7.3).
I think that was because I have the 1PW 7.3 for Mac installed and it's not needed on X.
Is that right?Thanks!

That's currently the case, yes. 1Password X communicates directly with the 1password.com servers, not with the local 1Password for Mac app, so 1Password for Mac doesn't "know" that you've already entered your Master Password into 1Password X.
Having said that, we are moving towards something we call Desktop App Integration, which is exactly what it sounds like: allowing 1Password X to communicate with 1Password for Mac -- and vice-versa. You can read more about it here and even set yourself up with it -- if you don't mind living a little dangerously. It requires the beta versions of both 1Password X and 1Password 7 for Mac...but it works pretty well in my experience so far, and will only get better. The only reason I say "live dangerously" is because of the beta version aspect -- we wouldn't release them if they weren't pretty stable, but they are still beta versions, so I make sure to point that out so you can make an informed decision.
On the other hand, if you're satisfied with the results of the "non-X" extension ("desktop app required"), then you're welcome to continue using that also. :)

Thank you for the helpful explanation!
(I'll skip beta.)Are there non-beta versions of 1PW X?
If I want to go back to using (non-beta) 1PW X, I would need to remove the desktop app (1PW 7), correct? Then, I would only need to log in __once__ with my master PW, is that right?
Will I still experience 1PW locking from browser restarts with 1PW X?
In which case, I'd stay with the non-X extension. Are you looking at eventually doing away with the "non-X" extension?
I'd really like to keep the use of 1PW as streamlined and effective as possible.

Suggestions? It sounds like you want the "desktop app required" extension. :+1:
Are there non-beta versions of 1PW X?
There are, but not ones that support Desktop App Integration like Lars was talking about. That feature isn't out of beta yet.
Will I still experience 1PW locking from browser restarts with 1PW X?
With 1Password X and without Desktop App Integration: yes.
If I want to go back to using (non-beta) 1PW X, I would need to remove the desktop app (1PW 7), correct?
I don't think you want to do that, but you would remove the "desktop app required" extension, yes. You could continue to use 1Password 7 for Mac (the application) but it won't lock/unlock with 1Password X like the "desktop app required" extension does.

Thank you so much!
You have answered all my questions and really understand what I am looking for.
I appreciate the factual information.I will stick with the "desktop app required" extension.
