1Password 8 Keeps Locking

Auto-lock, under Preferences > Security, is unticked - yet I find I'm having to put my master password in a lot. It's a key security app (and brilliant by the way - long time user), however on my secured Mac once it's open and unlocked I don't want to have to be putting in a complex master password every day or multiple times a day. Is there a bug with the new release causing it lock when it shouldn't? Or am I missing a new setting?'

  • Welcome to the 1Password Support Community, @jivemm, and thanks for the kind words!

I believe that check box will only disable auto-locking in those named scenarios. If you change the time period in the setting just below it, Lock after the computer is idle for, does that improve your experience?

Let me know if not and we can troubleshoot further. 🙂

I'm having the same issue on a Mac Mini running Monterey 12.6 and 1Password V. 8.9.4.

Not sure if the image below will show but "Auto-lock" is unchecked and "Lock after computer is idle for" is "Never". On the Mac Mini there is no biometric authentication, so I'm plugging in the lengthy password 5-7 times a day. It's really winding me up now.

Are you being prompted for your account password when you're using the main 1Password 8 app or when you try to use 1Password in the browser?

If it's the app itself then are you using the Shift-Command-L shortcut by any chance? And, when the app locks, do you still see the 1Password icon in the menubar at the top of your screen or is the app completely closing when it locks?

    Hey Dave,

    Thanks for picking this up.

I'll need to do a bit of experimentation and observation when I get back home. Definitely not using the shortcut, as I wasn't even aware of it.

I'll post my feedback once I have some.

EbanksMS, I think the issue is because of the user interface, the Auto-lock toggle is not related to the 'Lock after a computer is idle for...' setting, you need put it to 'Never'. I have the same problem as you described, trying this out myself today.

  • @vshel

Thank you for the suggestion! It looks like @EbanksMS already has "Lock after the computer is idle for" set to "Never" judging by the screenshot posted above.

    @EbanksMS

We'll keep an eye out for your reply and go from there. 🙂

Ok folks. After a bit of observation: The password is required after the computer goes to sleep for a while. I tried a manual sleep for 5-10 mins but it didn't lock. If I leave the computer for an hour or so with or without locking the screen i.e. manual lock vs auto-lock the password is required. When the password is required it doesn't matter where I attempt to use 1Password. Tested across 3 browsers and the app itself. When it's locked the 1Password icon remains in the menubar with a little lock added to it.

At this juncture I haven't determined what specific amount of sleep is required to trigger the lock. What I'll do is set an alarm starting at 20 mins and progress up or down from there.

On my Intel MacBook Pro I wasn't happy with the elapsed sleep time before it swapped from fingerprint to password login (to the OS). If I remember correctly is normally about 3 days but I use the MacBook less frequently than the Mini so it was usually 5-6 days between uses. Google search led me to an article somewhere that discussed MacOS' differing levels of "sleep" and what happens at each level. Turning off WiFi etc. Unfortunately, I didn't have any success with the biometric issue but I did learn a bit about MacOS' sleep mode including the fact that it can be tweaked at the command line level. I wonder if something like this is at play here?

Next steps for me are to determine how much "sleep" is required to trigger the lock and if there is a difference between manual and auto sleep.

This version seems to lock itself regardless of the options set, and, the time to lock seems to be unrelated to anything obvious. I would note however that the problem occurs mostly on my iMac using Apple chipset; on a slightly older MacBook Pro, the lock settings seem to be respected. Both Macs use the same Mac OS versions (Monterey - current) and both use the same 1Password versions. The iMac has 1Password for Safari listed in Extensions, the other will not add the extensions in and they are not listed in extensions despite downloading.

As an aside, I also use the same password software on couple of iPads - why are the apps so different? Visually and functionally they are dissimilar - is there any chance that the apps will all look the same in the future - for example favourites, Search box positions etc. DO the development teams speak to each other?
