Can't install 1P Safari extension

I had the 1P extension working with Safari in the past, but when I tried to use it just now, 1P was not in the list of Safari extensions. I went to the Mac App store and downloaded the extension, and then instead of the word "Get" in the App store, it said "Open." This is what I expected.

When I clicked "Open," I got a pop up saying I should go to Safari Preferences, and under Extensions, activate the 1P extension. Unfortunately, when I go to Safari Preferences-->Extensions, 1P is not in the list at all, so I obviously can't activate it!

So, what's next?

1Password Version: 8.8.0
Extension Version: none, yet
OS Version: 11.6.8
Browser:_ safari

  • Hi @camner:

Thanks for reaching out, and I'd like to apologize for the delay. Are you still having trouble with 1Password for Safari?

    Hey @camner

Try using the Fix missing Safari extension button from the 1Password > Help > Troubleshooting menu.

That did the trick, but is this something I am going to have to do each time Safari is updated? This worked on Sept 3, but here it is less than a month later, and the extension is missing again! I did update Safari in the meantime, but that could be coincidence.

Have to say that if this happens each time Safari and/or 1P comes out with an update, it is going to be a pain!

I'm happy to hear that the steps resolved the issue. This is a known issue with macOS which affects all Safari web extensions, not just 1Password. I don't believe that there is a correlation between updating Safari and the extensions disappearing and that might just be a coincidence. Our team is working with Apple to investigate further and we hope to see a fix in the future.

Perhaps it is also coincidence that 1P is the only extension I've had this issue with, and multiple times.

Glad to hear you are working with Apple to try to resolve the issue!

(May I suggest a slight improvement, though? When one goes to the help menu and "Fix Missing Safari Extension" there is no feedback that anything has happened. Wouldn't it be possible to present some sort of message after that option is chosen? It would be more reassuring.)

Thank you for the reply. After running the tool you'll immediately be able to see 1Password in Safari again. That being said, a confirmation message after running the "Fix Missing Safari Extension" tool sounds like a good idea to me too. While I can't make any promises, I've passed along your feedback to the team. 🙂
