Losing connection with Safari

Regularly 1Password looses contact with Safari – at least weekly.

I get the message to reconnect 1Password but after clicking that, it reconnects but doesn't really work until I restart Safari. The 1Password popup in the window title bar works again, but the one in the fields doesn't and neither will autofill. Menu bar 1Password also won't autofill.

1Password Version: 8.10.28
Extension Version: 2.22.1
OS Version: 14.4.1
Browser: Safari

Well I'm not getting the message as often now but it's still disconnecting all the time. Now I'm getting fun new issues. There are no console logs so I assume 1Password is just disconnected.

I'm sorry that 1Password for Safari isn't loading properly. It looks like the team has encountered that specific behaviour internally as well. Since it's been some time since your initial post can you tell me if you've updated to the latest versions of macOS, 1Password, and the browser extension?

    • macOS: 14.5
    • 1Password for Mac: 8.10.32
    • 1Password for Safari: 2.23.3

If you're still seeing the issue when using the latest version of everything then let me know. 🙂

Thanks, I've manually updated both, fingers crossed.

  • If the issue comes back then let me know and I can investigate further. 🙂

This has been happening to me for over 8 months. I posted on the community and submitted support requests. After an update it seems to work ok but eventually it reverts to the same behavior. The Safari extension is locked and it says to "unlock" 1Password. Unfortunately, nothing happens when I click the button to unlock 1Password.

The only workaround that I have found is to right-click on the extension, click "manage extension" => on the window that appears unmark the 1Password extension => wait 2 seconds and mark the box again.

This doesn't happen in any other browser except Safari.

During an update, the communication between the browser extensions and the app is severed by macOS. The following steps will restart that connection.

    1. Look for our helper in the menu bar near the WiFi indicator and the clock. Right-click (Option-click) on the helper and select quit 1Password completely.
    2. Quit your browser.
    3. Wait a few seconds and then open 1Password from the Dock or the Applications folder and unlock
    4. Open your browser.

Your method is essentially the same procedure by disabling the extension and then enabling it.

Shouldn’t this be considered a bug? It doesn’t happen in other browsers.

  • Unfortunately, yes, for us, this is a bug on the Safari side and we can't easily work around that. We have some logic to overcome by asking 1Password to fully quit and restart once the update is complete, but it's not perfect since 1Password does not have permissions to terminate and relaunch Safari.

We are working with Apple to determine how we are able to improve this behavior for future updates where you'll be prompted to also relaunch Safari. In the meantime, fully quitting both Safari and 1Password should remedy the issue for you.

That's good that ya'll have a strong partnership with Apple but it's been over a year. Seems like Apple is not willing to work with your team on a solid resolution? This is one of the reasons people can't use Safari. I want to use Safari but Apple places obstacles along the way. Safari is over 21 years old now, right? And people are still struggling with obstacles and conflicting bugs even with one of the best-selling apps on the Apple Store. I've been using 1Password for around 14 years but it seems like it has always conflicted with the workflow in Safari.

  • Thanks for the feedback I've passed it to the team.

    +1 to this

I have the issue happening almost daily, or every other day, so it's not app / extension update related. To resolve, I need to disable and re-enable the "Connect with 1Password in the browser" check box in the main app. I'm on the latest version of app / extension / Safari and as someone else has mentioned, this has been happening for months now. Hoping for a resolution asap as it's driving me nuts.

If you use the nightly you may see this more often due to the nighty updates. You may want to touch base with our technical team. If you're so inclined email us using support+forum@1password.com. Be sure to use the email address tied to the account in question.
