Manually copying a password in the password generator field does not create a 'Password' entry
I have a big problem with the password generator in 1Password 5.
If I use the password generator, then copy what's in the box (via selecting it and copying it, not using the fill button), the password is not saved in my 1password keychain. Re-opening the password generator gives me a new password, so there is no option to recover a password used.
I lost a password I generated on a financial site that requires a very hectic process to reset (identity verification, long turnaround time, human intervention, etc) because the password only existed on my clipboard. Now I have actual money in limbo while sorting this out.
I consider this to be a bug that I would like to see addressed. The old version of 1Password did not behave this way, as it saved EVERYTHING. I would use the fill feature, but I'm never sure if it's going to automatically submit the form, so I avoid the button.

I agree. I miss this badly as well WTF has happened here? The new program is a disaster!

Any generated password which is not specifically linked to a saved login item should be automatically saved for you as a Password item. Have you looked there?

The keychain did not update. No dropbox sync was triggered. The item does not appear in Passwords. The password generator is bugged.

I have not found the password generator to be buggy but maybe that's because my use of it differs from yours. You said in your first post:
If I use the password generator, then copy what's in the box (via selecting it and copying it, not using the fill button), the password is not saved in my 1password keychain.
I'm not sure why you copied from the box but I imagine that probably has something to do with the generated password not being saved in 1P. Have you tried doing things the recommended way...which is to get 1P to fill the generated password for you? If you do that you should find not only is it saved in 1P but it's also saved to your clipboard (just in case you wish to paste it somewhere for quick reference).

Hi @josmul123
I can replicate what you're describing.
If you access the Password Generator from the extension or 1Password mini and manually copy the password by selecting the password and using either ⌘C or Copy from the contextual menu (right click) then it isn't stored as a Password item in 1Password. Using the Fill button changing it to just Copy via the ▼ button just to the right of where it says Fill, either of those will result in a Password item being generated.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having to go through some hoops to reset your password (financial sites in general usually have a good few steps, I know from personal experience). I've created a request but until it has had time to be evaluated and acted upon how do you feel about using the Copy button that is supplied? It will generate the Password item if you do so and you don't have to rely on the Fill part. I just suggest this as a workaround while your request is considered.

I am having the same problem. Your suggested answer does not work, because if you select copy, it does not fill, and then if you select fill after that, it makes a new password. Basically the password generator does not work at all anymore, and i am going to have to make up my own passwords until you fix this problem.

I've run into this issue several times over the past couple of weeks because I'm in the process of updating my passwords from simple ones that I've always used, to much more difficult ones created by the password generator. Based on my experience, I now always copy the new "difficult & complex" generated password to my notepad in case I run into a problem creating a new password for a website. Too many times I created a new password, and then had to go back to the site and update it again because something went awry. Long story short is, copy the new generated password to a notepad or word document until you've verified that the new password you've created for a website works.

The original query was regarding somebody manually copying a generated password using OS X's clipboard e.g. ⌘C. If you want to use the Fill option then doing so will create a Password item in 1Password which can be found in the Categories list in the Sidebar. The Fill option can also be set to copy the password to your clipboard meaning it can be pasted as well as already being stored in a Password item (see the screenshot below).
If I'm misunderstanding something please do post back and help me understand how it isn't working for you.
For full transparency. I don't use the Password Generator and I've always manually updated all my passwords in 1Password. It's just my habit and it isn't going to change any time soon (so I don't do it because I perceive some flaw in it, it's merely my preference).

@littlebobbytables Thanks for the helpful feedback. The copy button was hidden. It's nice that it's there, but I still think the password generator's policy on password retention can lead the user to inadvertently discard passwords they need.
@robbski I do not like the suggestion about notepad because I use a mac, and TextEdit saves drafts like crazy... Which leads to unencrypted passwords hitting the filesystem, which doesn't sit well with me.
@littlebobbytables I would appreciate an update that captures ⌘C-style copy. I appreciate you putting in the request. I hope your dev team finds as much value in this update as I do.

Hey guys,
Not too long ago we added the ability to edit the text field for generated password in 1Password mini's Password Generator and we haven't taken into account the users can use ⌘C or right-click to copy the generated password since we already had a copy button.
I did see the internal issue that @littlebobbytables opened in our issue tracker and it's very well documented indeed, so we'll fix it in a future release of 1Password 5 for Mac.
Thanks!

The generated password history is not working in either 1PW 4 (my sister's version) or 1 PW 5 (my version). This is an essential function and needs to be fixed ASAP. Without it, the user of generated passwords is reduced to writing them down until sure that the generated password has been filled to the website in question AND successfully recorded to the corresponding 1PW record for that website. Please help!!!

Hi @DixieBoy09,
When you use the Password Generator from 1Password mini or the browser extension, do you click the Fill button? Or do you use ⌘C (or right-click > Copy) to copy & paste the generated password?
If you click the Fill button (or if you click the ▼ button next to Fill and choose Copy), that will create a new Password item in 1Password. Open the main 1Password app, click on the Passwords category on the left sidebar, and you should see a new item for the new password you generated (you can sort the list by Date Created if it helps).
On the other hand, if you copy it by selecting the generated password and using ⌘C (or right-click > Copy), it won't be stored as a Password item in 1Password.
Does that help to explain what's happening? Please let us know if you have more questions about that.

This is a HUGE problem in 1Password 5. I have used 1P for years, and I can NO LONGER TRUST your system. Please provide a fix. Literally, the password I store -- even manually -- are often being "thrown away". I created proof in a TextPad document, with dates and new passwords, to verify that I wasn't making things up about 1P losing password. And yes, information is being lost. This is HUGE!
For example, I will change a password manually in the 1P edit screen, based on a generated password -- that is, I copy the gen'd pwd and paste it into the pwd change features on the site I'm visiting, then paste it in as the new password in the 1P login record. Then, I verify it by using autofill in 1P to login.
When I come back tomorrow and do it again, the OLD PASSWORD is stored in the 1P record -- but I just used it yesterday on autofill. What is going on? All the bells and whistles are useless is 1P cannot remember passwords.
In particular, I am noticing this problem logging into Wordpress accounts of mine and a small business phone management site. I have proof on 3 occassions now that 1P failed. Can I downgrade to V4...??? seriously.0 -
Hi @MarcC,
Thanks for the follow up :+1:
Can you please confirm that you are experiencing the scenario below?
- Go to a website's change password page
- Copy paste the old password from 1Password into the old password field.
- Generate a new Password in 1Password mini then copy the newly generated password using the copy button (not ⌘+C in the text field).
- Go to 1Password and notice that a new Password Item has been created
- Copy/paste the newly generated password into the new and the old password fields.
- Submit your you password change on the website and the autosave window appears.
- Choose to update an existing password or save as new password.
If you chose update, then the newly created Password Item will be trashed and the Generated Password will be changed to the current password. The old password can be found under Previously used Passwords.
However, if you chose to create a new password, then the newly created Password Item will be "converted" into a Login item.
If the problem you see is not this scenario, can you please send us the detailed steps to reproduce the bug. Once we can reproduce it, we'll be able to fix it in no time
I look forward to your reply.
Happy New Year!

Thanks, but I now have proof positive that 1P is losing passwords. I even confirmed what was stored before I quit 1P. Next day, I open it back up, different password. Very scary to have this so blatantly wrong. I then can't login to my site -- in this case, Toodledo.com. Luckily I am doing "double accounting" for all my password changes and have proof positive of the correct password, as created by 1P's password generator, but literally thrown away after adding and SAVED into a 1P account record. This is very serious. What do you need to review this? Otherwise, I would like either a) a downgrade to V4 which worked reliably, b) refund so I can purchase something else, or ideally c) a quick solution (not a workaround), a fix. Thx, Marc
P.S. I have used 1P for many years on iOS and Mac, so I am VERY familiar with the in's and out's. I manage over 1000 passwords and never ever had problems until the latest V5. Now passwords are trashed regularly (at least 3 different sites so far).0 -
Hi @MarcC,
I am sorry for the frustration here.
What do you need to review this?
In order to track this issue down we need to replicate the steps that you are taking that lead to this behaviour. Could you please look at the steps that Rad posted above? Are those the steps that you are taking to change a password? If not, please provide a detailed walkthrough of the steps you take to change a password.
Once we are able to copy your steps and see what you are seeing, we'll be much better able to find a proper solution.

My problem is apparently related to 1Password not flushing its cache to the 1P file (DB), even when the browser is shut down. Then, if I run a cache cleaner (which I must from time to time), 1P "loses" passwords. How do I FULLY shut down 1P so that all writes are properly flushed. Shutting down the browser apparently is insufficient for 1Password. Then, I could restart 1P as needed, I presume.

I can't comment on the technical aspects of 1P allegedly not flushing its cache, but you can shut down 1P and 1P mini (which you normally want to leave running to enable 1P to work in your browser) by using ⌃⌘Q (instead of just ⌘Q) to quit 1Password. I guess the alternative would be to go to 1P > Preferences > General and ensure Always keep 1Password mini running is not checked. However, doing that will disable a lot of the functionality of 1P as whole.

This is a great thread. I occasionally have the same problem as expressed in the original post, and I never understood why. I use the password generator to create a new password, manually highlight it and copy it (CNTL-C), then paste it (CNTL-V) into the password field on the website. I would later find that the password was invalid when trying to log into the website, and that 1P had not saved any record of the password in the Password category.
This thread helps me to understand what is happening, and how I need to change my usage behavior accordingly. I do agree with other comments, however, that the fundamental design could be improved. Designs that "allow the user to do the wrong thing" can always be improved.

Can you give us a more detailed description of your environment please. We're interested in:
- OS X version
- 1Password version, both the main application and the extension
- If you're running the 1Password 3 extension
- Browser and browser version
- This cache cleaner that seems to be involved in the situation.
I'll make sure this is passed on to those who would be involved in any necessary fix.

Hi @pomme4moi
Sometimes we make mistakes and don't predict usage correctly. This particular issue though has been recorded and has the attention of the devs. There's certainly no disagreement that covering this use case would be beneficial. I think we'll all be happier once it behaves as we expect it to

Hi @MarcC
I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac.
Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com
Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.
Once you've sent the Report a post here with the ticket ID will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)
I've discussed your situation with others and they have their suspicions which a DR will hopefully confirm (or discount). Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!
