I have been with you guys since the beginning. I have a MacBook Pro 17" running Snow Leopard and upgraded my 1Password 1 to version 3 last week once I found the link. I have a iPhone 4s running 7.1.2 and on 1Password 3.7.2. All is syncing fine, I choose to sync with my cord between devices. Recently I bought a Mac MINI running Yosemite pre-installed. I purchased 1password 5 for it and I don't want to have to use a cloud service to sync but willing to use Wi-Fi option to sync between them if I can't do it with a cord. (is there a way to do it with a cord?)
The problem is I can't get the Mac Mini w 1Password 5 to sync with the phone or the other MBP via Wifi. The 1password 5 offers a code to type in to sync but neither the iphone nor Macbook Pro are responding to it to picking it up. Help?

    Hi @MelFunxion‌,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us :+1:

USB sync is no longer available since in 1Password 4. Please make sure that you read this topic for more information.

1Password 3 for Mac can do Wi-Fi sync with 1Password 3 for iOS. You cannot sync via Wi-Fi a device using 1Password 3 with another device using a newer version of 1Password.

    Our options are:

    • The most convenient solution for your setup would be Dropbox sync. But since you want to stay away from a cloud solution, we can try the second one.
    • Folder sync between your two Macs and leave your iPhone to sync with your Snow Leopard MacBook Pro.

First, you need enable Folder sync on a USB drive on your MacBook Pro by moving the 1Password.agilekeychain file to that Drive in General > Data file > Choose Another... . Then enable Folder sync on your Mac mini in Preferences > Sync.

You will need need to quit 1Password 3 on your MacBook every time you unmount the drive to mount it on your Mac mini.

Hope that this helps. Please let me know if there's anything else that I can do for you.

    Cheers!

Thanks for your response. I followed the instructions and a few things are happening when I proceed with folder sync. The first, your instructions were: by moving the 1Password.agilekeychain file to that Drive in General > Data file > Choose Another... I tried that with a USB stick drive and it did not recognize it. So I tried with an External Drive it recognized it but when I clicked choose and external harddrive, 1password totally stopped and made me log on using my master password again. I figured it must have gone through. Then, I plug the External HD to my mac mini, I follow the directions using Folder option, I choose the external HD, It seems to take, except then it says : Syncing w folder: Ext. HD> 1password.agile keychain. "NEVER SYNCED." What does that mean? and where did I go wrong? Thanks, almost there.

    Hi @MelFunxion‌

I'm a Wi-Fi Sync user myself but I'm often enabling and disabling sync to try and mimic a particular scenario presented to me. I often see the same message as you but I don't worry about it as I've yet to experience an occurrence where it hasn't. The easiest way to confirm it's working as expected is a quick check on both machines. In 1Password 5 if you change the layout to top (View > Item List Layout > Top) and then sort by Modified and do the same on 1Password 3 (View > Layout > Traditional) you can compare the latest modified entries. If they match it has synced.

I hope that has helped but if it doesn't please do let us know.

I think it works when I follow the last part: You will need need to quit 1Password 3 on your MacBook every time you unmount the drive to mount it on your Mac mini. That is the only time it says its been backed up. I'll keep playing with iit and will post if I get more warnings. For now, I think it is working. I just don't trust clouds and this is a little bit of work but we will see if I can get into a routine to make it smooth. thanks.

    1. MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard + 1Password 3 for Mac
    2. iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 + 1Password for iPhone 3.7.2
    3. Mac Mini, Yosemite + 1Password 5 for Mac

Hi, Here's what I have discovered to work best. For now, I'm making the MBP and iPhone the main sync hub, as they speak/adjust/sync fine together in unison. I then sync to the MacMini with the following directions. BUT, although the sync will ADD my passwords made on iPhone & MBP to Mini, It won't allow a clean sync going the reverse direction (MacMini TO MPB.) Nothing I add on MacMini will go the other way so I've been having to add info manually. ;-(
How to Back up 1Pword to all my devices
    iPhone 4s (IOS 7)
MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
Mac Mini running Yosemite (10.10.1) :

(Must be done in this order)

    iPhone 4s & MacBook Pro:
    Open 1Pword3 on MBP
Plug iPhone to USB on MBP, open 1Pword on phone, enter code.
Should sync automatically (left column of 1Pword3 on MBP)
look for ‘last synced’ time to confirm.

On MBP, Go Preferences>Back up> Back up now.
    (Should read Users>Library>AppSupport>1Pword>Backups)

Plug in external HD to MBP.
Go Finder>user>Library>App Support>1Pword>1Pword.agile…..Drag this file to Ext. HD

(click REPLACE old copy if option.)

(Crucial Step) CLOSE and Quit 1Pword3 on MBP BEFORE Unplugging Ext. HD!!

Plug same Ext HD into MacMini
    Open 1Pword5 app on MacMini
    Open preferences.
Should say synced with Ext HD.
    If not, go to 1Pword preferences>Change Syncing>Ext. HD>1Pword.agile…

(I have not found a way to transfer the PWs from Mini TO MBP. ):-( Help?

    Hi @MelFunxion‌

Firstly, sorry for the addition to your post. My head is around 80% mucus (feels like 95%) and as a result I'm pretty sure a gerbil could outsmart me. Having built up your confidence in me let's proceed with your post.

When you sync your Mac Mini the 1Password.agilekeychain on your external hard drive should be updated and represent a copy of the vault on your Mac Mini. If you were to replace the 1Password.agilekeychain on your MacBook Pro with this updated one it should seamlessly show the merged vault without any other action required.

What I'd say is when testing this simply copy the good 1Password.agilekeychain on your MacBook Pro to somewhere safe before replacing the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain once with the now merged copy that is on your external drive. That way you can easily restore it although you also have your backups that you're careful to create.

Let us know how you get along.

Thanks, so in short you are saying that I should stop going from MBP to Mini, and reverse the order to go from Mini to MPB. then sync phone from MBP? Also I noticed an update to 1Password 5 today. How will that help or is there a short cut now? I just get confused about updating somethings on the Mini and the MPB, I can't tell what gets added or removed as it is now. For example on the Mini, I have 196 logins, on the MPB I have 194. So things get confusing as to what was upgraded as I use both machines and don't want to sync over Dropbox. I don't mind Wi-Fi sync though but now confused where to start. Thank you.

    Hi @MelFunxion‌

Just to say while we would always recommend updating 1Password to the newest version for all the bug fixes it will include, that Folder Sync is unlikely to change. It's still worth updating though! (I'm personally loving the new versions).

Syncing should be possible both ways. After your Mac Mini has had a chance to update its internal database from the .agilekeychain and added all the changes back to the 1Password.agilekeychain we need to transfer that file back to where it needs to be on your MBP. Now in my previous post I talked about ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ which is the default location for it and where you seem to be copying from when you update the Mac Mini. If you copy the newer 1Password.agilekeychain from your external drive to there (with 1Password 3 not running obviously) then when you next launch 1Password 3 it should pick up the newer items given it's reading from the 1Password.agilekeychain.

If that isn't happening then something is indeed not working as expected. If you're unsure about doing that we can discuss the steps in more detail if you like. Let us know
