i switched my mac on today, only to find that 1password stopped working. not only did it sign me out of the icloud sync, it also deleted all passwords/backups/etc with it. i am either stuck with a manual backup from a year ago or i buy the blackmail mac app store upgrade ...

While I can understand that you are frustrated I can state quite confidently that 1Password has never intentionally (or unintentionally to the best of my knowledge) deleted vaults or backups. In fact the only way to do so is manually. While it is true that iCloud sync changed dramatically in 1Password 5 (as a result of shifting to the CloudKit framework), if you were syncing with iCloud yesterday and you're still using the same version of 1Password today as you were yesterday then iCloud sync should still work. The issues with iCloud Sync were only after upgrading both OS X and 1Password to the latest versions.
I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac.
Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com and include a detailed description of what happened as you can please.
Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.
Once you've sent the Report a post here with the ticket ID will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)
