buying 1P for Yosemite as well as older Mac OS -- what's the best strategy?
I'm running trial version of 1P5 on new MBP running Yosemite. I have an older MBP running Mavericks. And my wife has an even older MB running Mountain Lion I think. I'm also planning to use 1P on iphone & ipad. If I purchase 1P5 will that license let me register 1P4 or 1P3 on older MBP? If not, what's my best strategy for the least expense?

Purchasing 5 will indeed let you run version 4 and version 3
iOS is a separate purchase from the iTunes store.

Great, thanks. I probably have to get the website version and not the app store, is that right?

Since you have older machines the best sync method for you would be Dropbox. Both Mac App Store and the web store version allow syncing through Dropbox. Wifi sync can be Mac to iOS but not Mac to Mac.
I guess the major question is would the either of you be using iCloud syncing ? In the future, etc. iCloud syncing will not allow sharing of vaults.
Looks like from your specs only your Mac is available for iCloud syncing at the moment. I don't know about the iPhone etc as you didn't list specific details.
Your other machines may be able to move up to Yosemite should you wish to do so. I don't know the specifics on those and or your personal desires. The main question is what is your desire for sync method ? Now and in the future ? This will reflect the best suggestion for purchase type.
I am also pinging an admin, so he can also assist in this discussion. In a couple of hours off I go to my paying job. :(

Hi @joebg
Here are the two big scenarios.
Happy syncing with Dropbox now and in the future
You could purchase a single copy of 1Password 5 from us and that will cover all of your Macs running 1Password 3-5. Your iOS devices would need to be running iOS 7-8 and that would give them access to 1Password 4-5 for iOS. At this point you could sync all of them using Dropbox (or any combination of devices - that's really up to you). As each device/machine is upgraded it can run newer versions of 1Password but still remain in sync.
Happy syncing with Dropbox now but want iCloud in the future
If you envisage a point in the not to distant future where you believe all devices will be running 1Password 5 and you want the possibility of syncing via iCloud then things are more complicated. It's doable but messy so I'm going to skip the description for now unless this is what you want. Regardless though, you'd be using Dropbox at the moment as it's the only way to sync a vault between copies of 1Password 5 and older versions.
The reason for these two scenarios is Apple restricted access to iCloud frameworks when they introduced their new iCloud. As of Yosemite and iOS 8 only applications sold via Apple's stores can access iCloud frameworks like CloudKit which we use. This restricts iCloud sync to only the MAS version of 1Password 5 for Mac. It isn't something we wanted but a situation we have to live with.
As you can see, if you're willing to use Dropbox for syncing life is a lot easier. Let us know your thoughts and we can take it from there.
