Setting up 1Password on a second computer not working
I hope someone can shed some light on how best to setup a new computer with 1Password.
I just bought a new Macbook Pro, so I...
- downloaded a new version of 1Password from the site and installed it.
- I then got a backup file from my desktop MAC and Airdropped it to my laptop.
- Opened 1Password.
- Clicked on right button "I've used 1Password before"
- I tried to "Restore from backup", it didn't work.
- I tried to "This mac" option, clicked "choose file", found the agilebite keychain zip file on computer, but when I hit blue "Open" button, nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong here? Your help would be much appreciated!

One more piece of information (not sure if this matters), on desktop I am running version 3.8.22. On new laptop I am running version 5.1

Hi @RyM8,
Thanks for letting us know the version numbers! If you'd like to keep your 1Password data in sync between both Macs, you can set up Dropbox sync in 1Password 3 on your older Mac, then choose to sync your vault from Dropbox when setting up 1Password 5 on your new MacBook. (If you'd like to do that and need help getting it set up, just let us know.)
If you don't need to keep 1Password synced between both Macs, you can use the backup file from 1Password 3, it just takes a couple extra steps because versions 3 and 5 use different backup formats. But it will still be pretty easy:
First, set up 1Password 5 as a new user (to avoid confusion, use the same master password you used in version 3).
Next, your backup file from 1Password 3 should have a name like "1Password_DATE_FORMAT.agilekeychain_zip" (where DATE_FORMAT would be the date the backup was made). To use that file to restore your data in 1Password 5, follow these steps:
- Rename the backup file to: 1Password.agilekeychain.zip
- Double-click that file to unzip it, and it will now be named 1Password.agilekeychain
- Open 1Password 5 and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences
- Select Sync, then choose Folder from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu
- Choose the 1Password.agilekeychain file
You should now have all your data in 1Password 5. Please let us know how it all goes and if you have any questions. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I would like to have both computers in sync. I tried to sync my Password3 account with Dropbox but when I go to "Preferences/General" the "Move to Dropbox" is greyed out. I have Dropbox installed on the computer so I don't know what the issue might be.
Please advise. Thanks

Hi @RyM8,
Normally, the Move to Dropbox option should only be grayed out if Dropbox is not installed on the Mac, your 1Password vault is already in Dropbox, or there's already another 1Password vault with the same name in your Dropbox folder. You should check on those things first, and if Dropbox is installed, you're not already syncing 1Password with Dropbox, and you don't have another .agilekeychain file with the same name in Dropbox, then you can follow these steps as a workaround:
- In 1Password 3, open the Preferences and select General.
- Take note of the file path under Data File so you know where to find your .agilekeychain file.
- Quit the 1Password 3 app.
- In the Finder, go to the location of your .agilekeychain file.
- Move that file to your Dropbox folder (the default location in Dropbox is normally
Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain
, but you can put it somewhere else in the Dropbox folder if you'd like). - After moving it to Dropbox, double-click the .agilekeychain file.
- When 1Password 3 asks if you want to start using that file, click Yes.
Once Dropbox has completely synced your vault, you'll be able to sync that with 1Password 5 on your new MacBook. Does that help? Let me know if you run into any problems or have questions about that. Thanks!
